Third Party Access changes
As your student continues to grow towards independence and adulthood, we expect that you are having discussions with them about their academic performance and financial aid situation. Under the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) students control access to their educational records and can share details of their progress with you. These conversations can be an important step for your student’s ownership of their own educational success. Should your student find a need to give you additional access to some of this information, they can provide “Third Party Authorization” to you.
If you have current authorization to your student’s financial aid information or academic record, your authorization will expire on October 12, due to a database system upgrade. Please note that your access to the Student Account Center to view/pay bills is not affected by this upgrade, because it is a separate system. However, both SU Online and the Student Account Center will be temporarily unavailable to anyone from October 12 to 16.
Your student will receive an email by October 12 letting them know current authorizations are expiring, and giving them instructions on how to authorize in the new system. FERPA requires that students initiate any third party authorization process. Beginning on October 16, they will be able to do so by going to SU Online. The process for academic record authorization is outlined here.
If authorized for financial aid package information, you will be able to view it online or to talk with Student Financial Services staff in person or on the phone after providing your student’s Seattle University ID# as a security measure.
If authorized to discuss elements of their academic record, you will be able to call your student’s advising office to discuss the specific parts of their record they have designated. You will be required to provide your student’s ID# as a security measure. No online access to your student’s academic records will be available.
