Falcon Friday Update-Sept 24, 2021
Olathe South High School
Principal's Corner
Homecoming week is in full swing! We've had a great week of spirit days and had an outstanding turnout at the Powerpuff game and the Luau last evening. The fun continues tonight with the crowning ceremony at halftime at the football game. We will conclude with the dance tomorrow evening.
We want this weekend to be a fun and positive experience for our students.....but more importantly we want it to be a safe weekend. Be aware that there social and peer influences as your student prepares for each of these memorable events. High school students don't need hovering but they do still need advice, supervision and monitoring as they learn to deal with more freedom and responsibility. Talking through potential scenarios and solutions before an event can proactively reduce the chances of a problem.
Go Falcons!

GiveBack2Schools App
We love supporting our local businesses and they love supporting us. This just got easier to do and more rewarding!
Over 50 businesses, (and growing every week), have pledged to give a percentage of every purchase to our programs. Most of these are household names -- Academy Sports + Outdoors, Fuzzy's Taco Shop, Old Shawnee Pizza, Tropical Smoothie Cafe, Salty Iguana Mexican Restaurant, IHOP, The Other Place -- and dozens more.
By using a free app, you can generate funds for the Olathe School Groups of your choice by simply shopping. Sounds too simple? I can tell you from experience, it is that simple.
Scan the QR Code or follow the link below for a quick 90-second explanatory video, links to download the app on Apple or Google Play stores, and access to our local ambassador.
Nothing extra to buy or sell or add to your calendar. This is a game-changer. Check it out.

Food Services Update
As the district has shared in the past, nationwide supply chain issues are making it challenging to obtain products in the quantities needed for our menu. This is a challenge we continue to face and local grocery stores and warehouses are not a viable option for the amount of product needed to serve our students. Additionally, the district may run out of a certain food or entree selection due to shortages, although the goal is for students at the end of lunch periods to have the same options as the children who eat earlier in the day. We appreciate your flexibility and patience with last minute menu changes. These issues are facing school districts and food distributors across the country.
Food Services, like many industries, is also facing a staffing shortage. Because of staffing challenges, middle school and high school will not be able to offer a la carte options or pay for a second entree for the time being. It is our hope that we can remedy this situation as staffing increases in our Food Services division.
The district is actively seeking Food Services, Paraprofessionals, and other support staff applicants. If you or someone you know is interested in applying to join the district’s support team, please visit www.olatheschools.org/employment.
Academic Assistance
Olathe South Students needing extra help with their classes have several options.
Teachers are available to work with students before school, after school and during advisory. If the teacher, student, and parents feel that the student could benefit from additional tutoring they may want to consider one of the options below.
Peer tutors are students who volunteer to help other students with their classes. Arrangements are made directly with the tutor. All peer tutors receive service hours (not pay) for their time. The list of peer tutors can be found here.
Drop-in tutoring is available in the Library every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 3:15 – 4:30. OS English, Math, and Science teachers will be available to help students. Sign up here.
If you prefer private tutoring from a certified teacher, you may request the district tutor list from the counselors. Arrangements for tutoring and fees are made through personal contact with the tutor.
