Important Information for Room W22
Important Information for Room 22
Welcome to a new school year! I am looking forward to getting to know your child. We have a lot of fun filled activities for the school year. Below, you will find the behavior policy and other important information for our classroom. If you have any questions or concerns throughout the school year, please email me. My email is crystal.kleier@bone.kyschools.us
New—Virtual Classroom
We will have a virtual classroom webpage this year. This webpage will be updated weekly with the classroom newsletter. It will also contain important dates, project due dates, and pictures of the students doing various activities. You can get to our class website, by going to the Ockerman Elementary Website and clicking on teacher webpages. Once you get to the teacher webpages, scroll down until you find my name. You can also scan the QR code that will automatically connect you to our page. This code is posted outside of the classroom door and it will be sent home with the students.
Agendas
Please make sure to sign your child’s agenda every night so that I know you are aware of what is going on in our classroom. Agendas are an excellent way for me to communicate with you. Examples of things you may find in your child’s agenda are behavior notes, notes about homework, homework assignments, etc. Please keep in mind that your child is now in the 5th grade and I expect them to have responsibility for themselves. That being said, I will not be checking to make sure your child writes their homework assignment in their agenda. They will have a chance to write homework assignments in their agendas at the end of each day. All homework assignments are written on the board and it is their responsibility to write it in their agendas. I will not write assignments in your child’s agenda for them.
Class Newsletters/Tuesday Folders
I try to send home a Class Newsletter home on a weekly basis. This will be sent home and uploaded to the class website on Tuesdays with the Tuesday Folders. Contained in the Tuesday Folders will be papers I have graded during the week, as well as any communication from the 5th grade team or the office. Please let me know right away if your child is not bringing home their Tuesday Folder. Tuesday Folders must be returned (empty) on Wednesday so they can be sent home again the following Tuesday.
Homework
I believe that homework is necessary for practicing skills that have been learned or for enriching the classroom experience. On the other hand, I don’t believe in overloading students with busywork! In many cases, homework is simply class work that was not finished. I try to give ample time in class for the completion of assignments, but some students work more slowly and must finish at home.
I expect all homework and class work to be turned in on time. Late assignments will be graded if they are turned in. Students will not be allowed to call home if they forget their work. Students should pack their book bags at night with all the materials needed for the next day. Organization is the key to success!
If a student fails to turn in an assignment, I will write a note in the student agenda and the agenda will need to be signed for that night. This notice will need to be signed by a parent; this is your official notification of missing work. A student will not receive recess until this notice is signed and returned. If a student misses 3 assignments in a subject, they will be assigned to detention in order to make up the work. If detention is missed, the missing work will remain zeroes.
Reading Logs
Studies show that students need to read for sustained periods of time in order to improve and move up in their ability. Students will be given a reading log on the first day of school for the week and are expected to fill it out each night. Students must read for at least 20 minutes a night and then record what they read on the Reading Log. Students may read anything they like: comic books, magazines, newspapers, books, etc, but it should be close to their grade level. Reading Logs are due every Monday. If a student is absent, they are still required to make up the reading time. If we have a snow day or a holiday, students do not have to make up the reading.
Class Parties/Birthdays
Occasionally, we will have classroom parties, and there are some who like to send in treats for birthdays (yea!!). I have no problem with treats during parties, but I do make one request. All treats brought into the classroom must be store bought. This way we can see the contents in the treats in case there is a food allergy in the classroom. The best treats to send in would be cupcakes, doughnuts, or individually wrapped items. Thanks so much for understanding the problem this can create and for helping to make our classroom run more smoothly.
Absent Work
There is a folder in the front of the room in which I will place any work a student misses while they are absent. It is the student’s responsibility to get the work out of this folder, do it, and then return it to me. For each day a student is absent, they have one day to make up the work. For example, if a child is absent on Monday and Tuesday, they have two days, starting on Wednesday, to make up the work. So in this case, the absent work would be due on Friday. I will not “hound” after a student to turn in missing work. This is their responsibility.
Accelerated Reader
Students are expected to read AR books and take quizzes on the books. If a student earns at least 220 points throughout the year, he/she will get to have lunch with the Principal. There is an AR point guide posted in the classroom with how many points a student needs each grading period to receive an A, B, C, D, or F.
