GRADE A
Often times a student will work hard in class and achieve learning; however the final grade may not meet parent or family expectations. Research has shown that encouraging a child to try for excellence and learning as opposed to just getting a specific grade can be a huge motivator.
A recent University of Michigan study published in the Journal of Family Psychology noted that a punitive approach to "unacceptable" grades can actually result in lower achievement. Research done by the university noted that punitive strategies do not address the underlying issues when a student is not learning, nor does it provide the student with concrete skills or strategies for improving.
What are your expectations for your Stevenson student? As we near the end of the first semester you might consider sitting down with your child to discuss your expectations as well your child's expectations regarding grades. Take time to talk about learning and how your son/daughter can seek help when needed and where to find the resources that can support his/her learning. Be sure that each of you understand what expectations are realistic and achievable.
GIVE THE GIFT of FAILURE. Wait! What?
Dr. Charles Fay of Love and Logic Institute asks the question, "Who are the most successful people you personally know? Have they always been successful, or have they experienced a good degree of failure? Do these adults demonstrate high levels of perseverance when the going gets tough, or do they avoid challenges like the plague?"
Fay notes that at the heart of all science and great innovation are risk and resulting failure. "Failure is not final." explains Fay, "It's informative."
So the next time your son/daughter comments on a failed assignment or a project that did not go well, maybe it is a good time to talk with him/her about success that grows from the seeds of failure. Then consider offering some thoughts on how he/she can talk with the teacher about improving. Or when your son/daughter speaks anxiously about a specific class or voices concern about having a specific teacher consider using this opportunity to highlight the importance of persevering through the uncomfortable to master success.

Many colleges and post-secondary institutions require that a senior submit a seventh-semester transcript. Seventh semester transcripts can be requested through Parchment
(www.parchment.com) and should contain first semester grades from senior year.
First semester grades should be posted to a senior's transcript by the week of February 11, 2019. However, students do not need to wait until February to request his/her seventh semester transcript. Seniors can request his/her seventh-semester transcript prior to February 11 by selecting the HOLD for GRADES option in Parchment. Seniors that complete a request for his/her seventh-semester transcript after February 11, 2019 should select CURRENT TRANSCRIPT.

TO LOAN OR NOT TO LOAN? That's a tough question.
Most Michigan colleges/universities will begin sending admitted students Financial Aid Award Letters in the coming months provided the student completed the FAFSA. These Financial Aid Award Letters will highlight what type of financial aid the student qualifies to receive at that particular school.
The U.S. Department of Education offers resources to help families understand the different types of financial aid including the different types of loans. Visit https://goo.gl/7ESbrU for more information about accepting loans as a part of a financial aid package.
If a student has questions about the information received in a financial aid award letter the student should contact the Financial Aid Office of that particular college/university for clarification.
