HUSKY HUSTLE WAS A HUGE SUCCESS
Dear Summit Families-
On behalf of the Summit Elementary PTO, thank you for your generosity and enthusiasm to help us make our first annual Husky Hustle Fun Run a huge success! Despite the heat, the kids ran their hearts out and had an amazing time. The energy in the hallways and the classrooms were so rewarding and fun to see! The sea of rainbow colored shirts, red cheeks, and smiling faces running around the track are what our PTO is all about. Creating memories that will last a lifetime!
We are excited to announce that we crushed our goal of raising $15,000 coming in at an amazing $22,700!
We are thrilled with the opportunities this will allow our school and PTO to provide grants for our teachers, new programs for our students, and to be able to enhance the current events we are already offering.
Thank you to all the parent volunteers who manned water stations, snacks, handed out feet and jumped in wherever we needed you!
Lastly, thanks to Mr. Stuckey for your leadership, advice and help in the execution of this event, to Mr Dirkmann for your assistance in setting up the course and getting the kids ready all week leading up to the event, not to mention running with every grade level throughout the day! And to our wonderful PTO board, Beth Calvert, Hope West-Toebe, Amy Moomey, Keara Harris and Rachel Clevenstine for the planning and running of this wonderful event!
Sincerely,
Rachel Clevenstine
Summit Elementary PTO President
SAFETY DRILLS AT SUMMIT
Safety is always a top priority at school, which is why we practice safety drills and review safety plans. Some drills, like a fire drill, are very familiar. Some others, a medical alert for example, may not be. The following are the drills we practice throughout the school year.
- Fire drills are practiced monthly. Staff and students follow the evacuation route out of the classroom when the alarm sounds.
- Tornado drills are practiced at least twice a year, in the fall and spring. Staff and students go to locations in the building away from windows.
- Evacuation drills are practiced at least once a year. Staff and students go to a location away from school, typically the YMCA. We would need to evacuate if there was something going on inside the building (fire, water leak, no power, etc) that would not allow us to go back into the building for a considerable amount of time. Depending on the time of year, we would need a place inside to take the children quickly until we had further communication with parents.
- Medical Alert drills are practiced at least twice during the year and at least quarterly before school. A team of school staff that have been trained in CPR and First Aid respond to a medical emergency. This drill is practiced only by staff. Students do not participate.
- Lockdown drills are practiced at least twice a year. We have two different lockdowns, a code yellow and a code black. A code yellow would indicate a need for caution, but teaching and learning would continue in classrooms. Staff and students are asked to clear hallways and remain in classrooms. A code yellow would most commonly be used during a medical situation where we would need to get emergency personnel through our hallways without congestion. A code black would indicate an emergency and teaching and learning would stop. In this drill, the ALICE safety protocol will be introduced to our students in an age-appropriate manner. ALICE stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate. The goal of ALICE training is to learn strategies that empower individuals to take action in the event of a school threat or an intruder in the building. School districts in our area are moving to this new protocol, which is used by more than 3,700 schools nationwide. ALICE training helps staff learn new proactive strategies for responding to crisis situations. “Lock the door and hide” might be an appropriate strategy in some situations. In other cases, teachers and students might take precautions to barricade the entrance of the classroom, or even choose to leave the building if that is the safest option.More information about ALICE, including Frequently Asked Questions, is on the District website under Family Resources.
*Please know we are transitioning away from "code words" as we continue our training and learning. In its place we will use plain language. This will help our communication as new students, substitutes, or parent volunteers might be in the building during a drill or real situation.
The safety of all students, staff and visitors to our building is our highest priority. We have a responsibility to those in our care to have proactive, options-based safety strategies, and our hope is that by taking these steps to increase awareness and learn new safety skills, we will continue to keep all students as safe as possible. Please do not hesitate to contact Mr.Stuckey if you have any questions or concerns.
PLEASE COMPLETE THE PARENT COMMUNICATION SURVEY!
The Oconomowoc Area School District is committed to providing a great place for students to learn and for parents to send their children for a quality education. We annually survey parents concerning their child’s school to help us provide continued service excellence to our students, parents and community. Responses to this survey are analyzed to determine what is working well in our schools as well as what needs to be improved.
In analyzing responses from last year’s survey, an area for improvement was identified with regard to the question, “I regularly receive feedback from school staff on how well my child is learning.” This will be a district-wide focus during the 2017-18 school year.
In order to provide the excellence that you expect, we are asking for some additional feedback in this area. Please take a minute to respond to the following questions. Your opinions matter to us, and we will use this information to develop the kinds of feedback that will be most helpful to you regarding your son or daughter’s learning this year.
If you have children in more than one school, please complete a survey for each school.
