A Message Mr. Gutman-Superintendent
Dear WLCSD Parents:
Last week our Return to Learn Committee reconvened to review a number of possible options for a safe return to in-person learning. At last Thursday night’s Board Workshop, the Board of Education and administration discussed a number of items including Covid-19 data, the status of Covid-19 in our community and in Oakland County, PPE/safety measures for our schools (see video), the work of the Return to Learn Committee, and the Walled Lake COVID -19 Response Criteria.
Although no vote was taken, the conversation centered on a plan to begin to bring some students back to school while still maintaining the Our Path and the My Path options. This plan would involve students in two cohorts: a Monday/Tuesday cohort and a Thursday/Friday cohort. Students would receive instruction from teachers four days a week, and the plan for Wednesday (when schools would receive a deep cleaning) could involve small group meetings, individual work, teacher-directed and self-directed activities. This hybrid model was offered as an interim step in the process of returning students to school while, again, allowing those who prefer to do so to keep their children at home with remote options.
This is the link to the: WLCSD Special Board of Education Meeting - September 24, 2020.
Now that we have, finally, a budget from the State, and now that we have better information/guidance from the Oakland County Health Department, we are in a better position to consider more options for our students.
Thank you for your continued feedback and for your advocacy for your children.
Kenneth Gutman
Superintendent of Schools

Important ZOOM Reminders for Parents
Zoom is not only a window into our classroom, it’s also a window into your home. Being mindful of what’s happening in and around the webcam is extremely important as we all strive for a safe, healthy, and rewarding online learning experience for our children.
Please be sure "adult" conversations and language cannot be heard by other classmates.
Many lessons were learned throughout the first week of school regarding what works best in our Zoom online platform.
Teachers are working tirelessly to provide appropriate, engaging, and meaningful lessons. Please be mindful of the following tips when attending a Zoom lesson.
Reminders for Parents:
At no time should you take a screen shot of the video conference screen where other children are visible, and no images/videos should be posted on social media platforms.
Students are expected to maintain the same behavior and conduct during a video conference call as they would in the classroom. This is an extension of the regular classroom and school rules still apply.
It’s helpful if you keep the source of lighting in front or above the webcam. Avoid having a bright light or window behind you.
Progress slowly. Everyone is learning (including the adults) and it will take some time for everyone to adjust.
Be patient and forgiving with technology. It can be temperamental, "glitchy" and sometimes difficult to navigate so pause, breathe and keep this in perspective.
Remind all those living at the residence that the webcam will display those walking in the background and only school suitable activity and language should be used when the Zoom lesson is in session.
iReady Diagnostic
The information is used to guide teacher instruction and helps your child's teacher identify areas of strength and weakness. This is why we need you to let your child do the work on their own.
We know how difficult it is to stand by and watch your child struggle when they don't know the answer to something.
When your child takes the iReady Diagnostic, he/she will not know all of the answers. THIS IS OK!
We need you to let your child take this assessment completely on his/her own....Even if it means watching every question be answered incorrectly.
Please take some time to explore the information below. It's extremely important and we need you to be aware of what the iReady Diagnostic really is, what it will look like as it is administered at home, and how you can support us.
Your child's teacher will follow up with you and provide more information about testing.
This is just for you to view.
Chromebook Distribution
How Can I Get a Chromebook for my Child?
Chromebook DISTRIBUTION is taking place at the Educational Services Center at 850 Ladd Road, Walled Lake, (turn in at the Water Tower off of Maple Road between Pontiac Trail and Ladd Road) Saturday, Aug. 29 and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, August 30.
Parents who previously ordered Chromebooks and have not heard yet, will get an email. Thank you for your patience.
LAYA - Non Taste of the Lakes
Due to COVID restrictions, this year's Taste of the Lakes will be a virtual "non-event" with special door prize drawings including a 40-inch Big Screen Smart TV, an iPad, a Social Membership to Walden Woods (a value of $1,300) and two separate Adirondack chairs (note: one chair per drawing, the winner can select either the University of Michigan or Michigan State logo to be applied) to support the work of the Lakes Area Youth Assistance.
Lakes Area Youth Assistance (LAYA) is a non-profit organization designed to help at-risk children and their families who live in the Walled Lake Consolidated School District. Oakland County, local municipalities and volunteers work together to provide services and programs, which assisted more than 600 students in 2019.
To support our kids, please consider purchasing one ticket for $25 or you can buy four tickets for $100 and receive one more free. Tickets may be purchased now through Friday, October 9, 2020, at www.wlcstickets.com.
The drawing will be held on Monday, October 12, 2020, and you will be notified via phone if you are one of the lucky winners. Thank you for your support of our children.

Voluntary Student Accident Insurance
WALLED LAKE CONSOLIDATED SCHOOLS DOES NOT CARRY HEALTH OR ACCIDENT INSURANCE FOR STUDENTS. If your child is injured while at school, medical costs are the responsibility of the parents and/or guardians.
As a service to students and their families, our District is making available a student accident insurance plan for your child at a very nominal cost. The District offers this program because of trends in rising family health and dental insurance costs, increased deductibles, co-payments or lack of health or dental insurance coverage.
REASONS TO PURCHASE THIS COVERAGE:
- Deductible and co-pays in your health plan. Many health plans have increased the amount of out-of-pocket expenses.
- No insurance.
This plan will provide benefits for medical expenses incurred because of an accident. If you have other insurance, benefits can be applied to your deductible or co-pay. If you have no other insurance, this will become your primary accident plan.
TO PURCHASE COVERAGE ONLINE (by Credit/Debit Card) go to:
www.1stAgency.com/voluntaryaccidentcoverage.htm -- Follow directions by choosing STATE and SCHOOL DISTRICT. Visa or MasterCard is accepted.
OR
TO PAY WITH CHECK OR MONEY ORDER, PRINT BROCHURE PDF from First Agency’s website at www.1stAgency.com/voluntaryaccidentcoverage.htm -- Follow directions by choosing STATE and SCHOOL DISTRICT.
All questions regarding this coverage should be directed to First Agency, Inc., at (269) 381-6630 or toll free at (800) 243-6298.
We are pleased to make this student accident insurance plan available.
