Math
As we move into unit 5, our focus will switch from fractions to multiplication and division.
Unit 5 will specifically let students explore the parts of a division equation (dividend, divisor, and quotient) and use different strategies to find the quotient.
Some of these strategies include:
- Making equal groups using manipulatives and pictures
- Repeated subtraction
- Using arrays
- Knowing division is the inverse of multiplication
Students will also expand their knowledge of multiplication and master concepts like area and multiplying by multiples of 10.

Language Arts
This month we are moving back to informational texts to remind students of the importance of text features, making inferences in informational texts, summarizing informational passages and more.
Students will apply their knowledge of text features in their informational books in writing. Some examples of text features include: headings, subheadings, glossary, diagram, illustrations, maps, captions, etc.
Writing
Students are doing a great job on their informational books! They are learning about the importance of organizational strategies that make their books more enjoyable for the reader.
We are also working on writing about reading during their reading groups. Questions like, "write a paragraph explaining how this character changed throughout the story" or "how does this text feature better help you understand the text?" give students an opportunity to explain their thinking outside of our normal writing block.
