Mandatory AP Exams Pre-Administration Session

"Larger Than Life" Art Show
Wednesday, May 1 / 12:00-3:00 / Auditorium
Everyone is invited to this special event, showcasing student artwork from grades K-12. The theme of this art show is "Larger Than Life." Attendees will also get to enjoy musical performances by MEA students. Bring your friends and family!
High School Prom
Friday, May 10 / 6:00-10:00pm / Mission Bay Yacht Club
Hey High Schoolers! Get ready for your High School Prom, which will be held at the beautiful Mission Bay Yacht Club. This year's theme is "Masquerade Ball." All high school students are invited and encouraged to attend...no prom date needed!
Ticket prices
$30 (until 3/22) / $35 (until 5/3) / $40 (until 5/9)
No tickets sold at the door.
- The permission form and payment is due by Thursday, May 9, 3:00 pm to the front office.
- Permission form is also available in the front office.
- Pay with either cash (EXACT CHANGE ONLY) or a check made out to "Mt. Everest Academy."
- The yacht club is located at 1215 El Carmel Pl, San Diego, CA 92109.
Senior Prom at Serra High School
Saturday, June 1 / 7:00-10:00pm / Manchester Grand Hyatt
MEA seniors are invited to attend the Senior Prom with Serra High School. The theme is "Las Vegas" and the dance will be held at the Manchester Grand Hyatt. If you are interested in going, here are the details.
**** ANNOUNCEMENTS ****
May schedule for testing
State and AP testing starts May 6. Please be sure to carefully review the special testing calendar for May that can be found here. Different grade levels test at different times and some grade levels have more tests than others. Please note that regular study group classes are cancelled when students are testing. Life skills and sexual education classes are also taking place for 8th, 9th, and 10th graders in May and we highly encourage you to have your students attend. Please see your child’s supervising teacher with questions regarding the May schedule.
Grades 3, 4, & 5 will be the first to take the SBAC tests!
From Monday, May 6 through Thursday, May 9
Please note there will be:
- No K-5 study groups
- No K-5 extracurricular activities
- No PALS

Elementary Students on Campus
To parents of elementary students,
Students in grades K-5 are supervised when they are in study groups and PALS. Any other time elementary students are on campus, they need to be supervised by a parent or family member. They should not be left on their own to go from one extracurricular activity to another. Please plan for your child's supervision, so they can enjoy all the wonderful activities and friendships that are available here on campus.

Choosing Classes for 2019-20
If you (or your student) are currently in grades 8-11 you should have already had an appointment with Mr. Zappala where you discussed courses for next year and graduation and college entrance requirements. If you have not done that, please email him at rzappala@sandi.net to set up a time to meet. If you do not meet with Mr. Zappala your schedule for next year will be created for you without your input based on graduation requirements.

The Library challenge for June will be to show your public library card to the librarians for a prize. Though you cannot get a prize for this until June 1, the challenge is available on our library’s website now with the public library’s application for a library card so you have it ready to go for our visit from the public librarian May 21st and the June challenge!

Balboa Library Calendar of Events-May 2019
The Youth Services Librarian, Helene Idels, at the Balboa Branch Library will be visiting Mt. Everest Academy on May 21st at 12:00 to share a brief presentation for the staff, parents, and students about the various programs and services offered for all ages at the library. This would specifically include details about the upcoming annual Summer Reading Program with this year’s theme of “It’s Showtime @ Your Library”. The SRP is a vital service to the children, teens, and adults of the City of San Diego. The intention of the program is to get everyone of all ages excited about reading and learning which helps them maintain or increase their reading level during the summer time. The availability of summer library programs for all ages enhances lifelong learning and provides meaningful, enjoyable experiences available to everyone in the community. The San Diego Public Library branches offer “Opportunity, Discovery, and Inspiration” for all. This school visit will provide more details and answer questions. Thank you for welcoming Balboa Library staff to your campus, we hope to see you there!

The last day to check out library materials for the school year is May 16th. All library materials (books, DVDs, Time Readers, Phonics Readers) are due by May 23rd.
The last week for Library Time is May 21st through May 23rd.
Textbooks are due to the textbook room (room 4) AS SOON AS YOU ARE FINISHED WITH THEM, or by June 11th at the latest.

Petunia Rizo receives Honorable Mention for her Flute Performance
Petunia Rizo (grade 8) competed in the Youth Artist Junior Division (up to grade 9) at the 2019 San Diego Flute Guild Spring Flute Festival on April 14, 2019 and received Honorable Mention. Here are the links to her performance videos:

Career Pathways Expo
Thursday, May 16 / 9:30 am / San Diego Continuing Education
The San Diego Promise Zone presents the Career Pathways Expo to learn about career tracks that will lead to promising technical careers. Technical training is more important that ever and can lead to good paying jobs that require a high school diploma, but not a four-year college degree. Learn about opportunities with employers and job training programs in the areas of Advanced Manufacturing, Building and Construction, and Information and Communications Technology. Meet one-on-one with representatives from these fields to answer any questions. The event is free, but attendees must pre-register.
Chess Summer Camp 2019
Chess Minds in Motion is offering 2 summer camp chess sessions: 1) June 17-21, and 2) June 24-28. Tailored instruction is open to all levels. The chess camp is taught by Martin Nillson, a USCF Life Master, USCF Professional Coach, and Swedish Cadet National Champion.
