A Message From WLCSD
Dear Parents:
It was very humbling for our staff to see the smiling faces of our high school seniors on Thursday as they picked up their caps and gowns in a curbside pick-up/drop-off fashion. It was so good for our students to be reminded about how amazing and resilient they are in the face of completing high school unlike any other class ever.
Last two weeks of school: Although virtual learning will continue, our elementary teachers may be taking some time away from their computers next week, June 1-5, to pack-up student belongings in individual bags, to prepare for parents to pick up student items the last week of school, June 8-12. Please be patient as our principals will be communicating with families at the end of next week about the staggered curbside pick-up process we will be using to ensure safety. Also, Commerce, Glengary, Walled Lake and Wixom Elementary staff will be packing up their entire classrooms for the bond construction work that will be done this summer. Our community overwhelmingly approved a bond to improve all of our schools in May of 2019. The funds from this bond can only be used for these construction projects.
Retrieval of Middle School and High School belongings is more complicated with individual student lockers, the return of books, instruments and materials, all coupled with the required social distancing. Please be patient as our principals will be communicating before the end of school how and when this will be done to ensure safety.
Next year and your input: As I mentioned last week, we will not be communicating plans for next year until we have both the Governor’s requirements for what will be allowed and the funding to provide the best option(s) for our families, always keeping safety the number one priority. We are reviewing the input from the more than 600 parents and staff who responded to the ongoing Virtual Learning Survey . We are preparing another survey for parents to ensure parent feedback is included in future decisions. Rest assured we are reviewing several options from face-to-face, to virtual, to a variety of hybrid methods, so we are prepared.
Budget: As we explained in this video Budget Update May, 2020, we are preparing a budget that includes sweeping reductions. Thank you for taking some time to review this updated WLCSD Budget Data. We are asking parents to advocate for unrestricted and federal funds with our federal legislators. Here are some important talking points about school funding.
Congratulations to:
- Elise Marra, WL Northern junior, who has written a full musical called Frankie! Congratulations Elis! Elise Marra audio snippet
- The WL Central Red Cross Club led by WLC seniors: Sara Suiter, Sara Xjaha, Emma Anderson, Ashley Gomoluch, and Noor Al-Jelihawi, who made 120 cards and advisor Sandra Brough-Gresh made 35 cloth masks and delivered them last week to Westlake Health Campus—nursing home.
- WL Westrn jazz combo students who created this amazing music video!
Other updated information
- Senior Recognition: This flyer outlines Senior Celebration Events for the Class of 2020 at WLC, WLN and WLW!!! WLCSD Congratulates Senior Class of 2020
- Summer Care: With the Governor’s Stay at Home Executive Order in place until mid-June, WLCSD will not be offering Summer Care for 2020. This is a difficult decision but with the uncertainty of the COVID virus, it is the safe and prudent course to take at this time. We are sorry for the inconvenience this may cause but we hope to see your children this Fall when school resumes.
- Food Distribution continues on Monday, June 1
- Virtual Kindergarten Orientation: Visit our Virtual Kindergarten Orientation process and the fully virtual enrollment process District Enrollment Link.
- Virtual Learning Survey: Please take a moment to complete our Virtual Learning Survey and give us your feedback.
- School Calendar: We continue to negotiate the school calendar for the 2020-2021 school year. When it is available, we will email it to families. Thank you for your patience.
We are committed to communicating what we know, when we know it. Thank you for your partnership in supporting our children and each other. Please be safe and let us know how we can help you at info@wlcsd.org.
Wishing you safety and health,
Kenneth Gutman

Fifth Grade Zoom Celebration
During the Zoom meetings, students will hear from their teachers, Mr. Drewno, and our fifth grade TEAM essay readers. We will acknowledge our safeties, student council and spelling bee finalists as well. We will finish our meetings with a short video for our fifth graders to watch with their teachers.
We will have two separate Zoom meetings.
The content for each meeting will be exactly the same, and all teachers will be at both meetings.
The first Zoom meeting is for Mrs. Petsch and Mrs. Nichol's Classes from 10:00-10:45 AM.
The second Zoom meeting is for Mrs. Reed and Mr. Krimmel's Classes from 11:00-11:45 AM.
Login information and invites will be sent to fifth grade parents separately from the Dublin Times.
Both meetings are for our Dublin fifth graders. We can only hold 100 participants in a Zoom meeting online, therefore we had to create two meetings to make sure all students can participate.
Please DO NOT open this meeting on several devices. We will not be able to have enough room for all of our fifth graders if this happens. Parents may be part of this with their children on the same device their child is using, but please remember not to have others log in. Thank you for your help on this.
During our Curbside Exchange of Student Materials next week, your fifth grader will receive a special bag with a Fifth Grade Memory Book, a special T.E.A.M t-shirt and certificate, and other special Dublin certificates. Thank you for your patience and support.
We look forward to a great last week of school and celebrating our fifth grade team!
Yearbook Update
At this time we are not sure if yearbooks will be available when families retrieve student belongings. However, no worries, once yearbooks are delivered, we will be sure to get them distributed to every student.
A message from Lifetouch: Due to the Coronavirus and state mandates we are working with a reduced staff, social distancing, and making sure that the labs are sanitized and safe for our fellow employees to work in. With this being said, we currently cannot give you an exact date that you can expect your yearbooks to deliver, but we promise to keep you posted as the information is communicated with us.
Congratulations and Welcome New PTA Board!
Thank you for your volunteering your time and for your leadership with our Dublin PTA.

Dear Walled Lake Students and Parents,
One of the most favorite days of each and every school year is Field Day! This a day that our P.E. teachers plan and organize a wide variety of fun games/events at school, in which the students demonstrate the skills that they have learned in class throughout the year. It is an annual right of passage in most of our elementary schools, and always seems like the perfect way to celebrate the end of a school year!
This year is obviously a little different, but we just couldn’t wrap up the school year without a Field Day! And since we can’t be together at school for a real, live, in person event, the elementary P.E. teachers of Walled Lake have been working hard to organize an awesome “At Home Field Day” for all of our students and families to participate in! This
spring, the Online Physical Education Network (https://openphysed.org/) has put together a great set of events for a “National Field Day” that can be done at home. So we will use their amazing resources to ensure each of our Walled Lake students is still able to enjoy a Field Day experience this year!
In this packet, you will find all the information students will need, should they choose to participate in our At Home Field Day. You will find 3-4 event descriptions for each day, along with a list of the items students will need for the activities. Most of the items are things commonly found at home. But if you don’t have an item, you are free to substitute anything you might have that works. There is also a scorecard at the back of the packet that students can use to record their scores and times, if they choose. You should note that while the events are spread out across the days of the week, this format is designed to be as flexible as you need it to be. Events can be set up outside or indoors (provided there is enough space), if the weather is an issue. Students can do all of the events or just some of them. They can do a few each day, or do more on a day when they may have more time. Please feel free to participate in the way that works best for you and your family! You can also find helpful video descriptions of each of the events, by going to the website: https://openphysed.org/fielddayvideos.
As physical educators, it is our mission to help the students of Walled Lake acquire the knowledge, skills, fitness, and attitudes necessary to lead healthy and active lifestyles. Each year, Field Day is a big part of this mission. So thank you for helping us teach your child the importance of exercise and physical fitness, to promote health and well being!
We greatly miss seeing all of their smiling faces in our gyms at school. Although, we look forward to the day when we can all be back in P.E. together again, we hope these events bring a little bit of that Field Day magic to your child at home!
If you have any questions, please feel free to email your child’s P.E. teacher. Best of luck with the events. Be safe, have fun, and show great sportsmanship! We miss you, and we will all be cheering you on!
Sincerely,
The Walled Lake Elementary Physical Education Teachers
