Summer Reading Events and Programs
The 2018 Summer Reading Programs offer something for everyone! There will be weekly events, one-time specials for children and families, opportunities for teens to do community service, and special reading and activity adult programs.
Join us by signing up for our Children's Summer Reading Program. It all begins Thursday, June 21 at 10 a.m. Register for a wide assortment of programs and events online at glocesterlibraries.org.
Children's Programs
Drop-in and Decorate
Friday, June 1, through Saturday, June 30, Glocester Manton Library
Age Level: 5 years old and up
"Drop in" to the Glocester Manton Library' Children's Room during the month of June and use your creative skills to help us get ready for Summer Reading by helping to decorate our Children's Room. Each week, we will have a different musical instrument template for children to decorate. Each decoration will be hung in our Children's Room to celebrate our Summer Reading theme, Libraries Rock!
Sensory Story Time
Tuesday, May 22, 10:30 a.m., Harmony Library
Age Level: All ages
Children of all ages and abilities are welcome to join us for a fun, interactive story time. We will enjoy a story, music, and sensory play. Linda Brunetti of the Autism Project will be on hand to answer questions about resources and services available to families. Caregivers must be present during story time.
Father’s Day Story & Craft @ Michaels
Thursday, June 14, 10:30 a.m., Michaels, 371 Putnam Pike, Smithfield
Age Level: 2 – 5 years old
Join us for a special story time and craft at Michaels, 371 Putnam Pike, Smithfield, Rhode Island. We will read a Father's Day story then children will decorate a special gift to give to dad or any special person in their lives.
Tot Lot Tuesdays
Tuesday, June 26, July 3, July 10, July 17, July 24, and July 31, 10:30 a.m., Harmony Library Playground, Age Level: 1-4 years old with caregiver
Join us for this six-week series: an outside story time with books, music, and favorite rhymes followed by playground fun! Feel free to bring your picnic lunches and stay as long as you would like. Note: We will read and play indoors in inclement weather. You only need to register once for all the classes.
Rockin’ Musical Instruments: Pot Bells
Wednesday, June 27, 2 p.m., Harmony Library
Weekly Rockin' Musical Instruments will be held on July 11, 18, and 25.
Age Level: 7 to 11 years old
Libraries Rock is our theme and rockin’ instruments we will make! This week, we will start by making Pot Bells using terra cotta pots. We will also make a mallet for our bell. We will be using acrylic paint, so please dress accordingly.
Playdoh Pals
Thursday, June 28, July 5, July 12, July 19, July 26, and August 2, 10:30 a.m.,
Harmony Library
Age Level: 2 - 5 years old
Children will be encouraged to explore using different colors of Playdoh and Playdoh utensils in this six-week series. Children will help make different types of Playdoh in our kitchen. Playdoh is a fun way to entertain children and also a great way to build fine motor skills. Note: You only need to register once for all the classes.
Graphic Novel Book Club
Thursday, June 28, 4 p.m., Harmony Library
Age Level: 7-12 years old
Each month, children will pick up a book from the graphic novel series of the month at the Circulation Desk. At the end of the month, we'll discuss the series over snacks. Children will be encouraged to talk about the books, draw the characters, or discuss other great graphic novels. June’s graphic novel series selection will be Phoebe and her Unicorn by Dana Simpson. Children can read any of the seven books in the series.
Home Depot Kids Workshop
Friday, June 29, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., Glocester Manton Library
Age Level: 5-12 years old
Home Depot staff will be at the Glocester Manton Library to host a kids' workshop. Children will be encouraged to use tools and various materials to create something they will be able to take home and enjoy. Home Depot will have a staff member present to assist children, but parents are encouraged to join in on the fun as parental assistance might be required for younger children. Note: This is a drop-in program so registration is not necessary.
Teen Summer Volunteer Opportunity
Teen Volunteer Orientation
Tuesday, June 5, 4 p.m., Glocester Manton Library
Age Level: Rising 6th graders and up (as of September 2018)
Teens are invited to learn about summer volunteer opportunities with Glocester Libraries. Volunteers are needed to help out at library programs and serve as mentors to younger children. At this orientation, teens will learn what is expected of them as a volunteer and choose what programs and events they would like to volunteer for.
Note: Teens - please bring your dates of summer availability with you, and we'll bring the snacks!

Summer Movie Matinees

Our popular Tuesday Matinees will continue through July! Beat the heat by enjoying a movie on the big screen. Snacks will be served. Registration is not necessary. Bring a friend or two!

Fly Tying Workshop
Wednesday, June 5, June 12, and June 19, 6 p.m., Glocester Manton Library
Adults and teens (age 14 and up) are invited to learn the craft of fly tying with Scott Travers from the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management. The series will take place on three consecutive Wednesday evenings. All equipment for the fly tying and fishing will be supplied.
Meet the Author – Barbara Ann Whitman
Thursday, June 7, 6:30 p.m., Harmony Library
Age Level: 12 years and up
Meet Barbara Ann Whitman, author of her newly released Young Adult novel, Have Mercy. Whitman, who has worked more than 20 years with foster teens, will talk about the writing process – connecting with an idea, using personal experience, and making the transition from personal writing to published author. A book sale and signing will follow a reading from Have Mercy.
Crochet Group
Monday, June 18, 6:30 p.m., Harmony Library
Beginners and crocheters that are more advanced are invited to learn and share their experience in a comfortable room for crochet and conversation! Ashley Ledoux, an experienced crocheter, will teach beginners and be available for assistance and advice.
Drawing Hands Workshop
Wednesday, June 20, June 27, and July 11, 6 p.m., Glocester Manton Library
Learn how to capture the form and gesture of the hand with local artist and retired art teacher, Paul DuHamel. In this workshop, students will gain the skills needed to approach drawing hands with confidence. All materials will be supplied.
Glocester Libraries’ Walking Club – Walk #1
Wednesday, June 20, 8 a.m., Acotes Hill Cemetery – Meet at the parking lot at the baseball field next to the cemetery (across from Dino’s) on Putnam Pike.
The Glocester Libraries Walking Club kicks off the 2018 season with this historic destination. Note: The Club will also enjoy walks on Wednesday - June 27, July 11, July 18, July 25, August 1, August 8, and August 15. Don't forget sunscreen and insect repellent.
Writers' Support Group

Read and share your personal projects at this monthly meeting. This adult group is open to writers in all genres.
Glocester Libraries' Walking Club - Walk #2
Wednesday, June 27, 8 a.m., Ponaganset High School Cross Country Trail, 91 Anan Wade Road. We will meet at the former middle school parking lot.
Enjoy a walk on the trail used by the PHS Cross Country Team and host to the State Cross Country Championships with wide and well-groomed trails, three bridges, and one beautifully crafted covered bridge.
