Happy New Year!
Happy New Year and welcome back!!!! I hope you all had a wonderful, happy
and healthy Holiday Season with your family and friends. Although we had
shortened month of December with our days off for winter break, we had a fun
and exciting month.
We held our core value assemblies recognizing students for their Effort and Kindness. In addition, the Gardening club once again decorated our Celebration Tree with ornaments created by the students.
Mrs. Katz, our district Guidance Counselor, held an anti-bullying assembly/training for our student body providing students with examples of bullying vs. non-bullying behaviors, procedures for reporting bullying, being a bystander vs. an upstander, and strategies to employ if confronted by a bully.
Mrs. Willever, author/parent, provided our students with a wonderful assembly and generously donated materials to the teachers and her latest novel to the students. I'd like to thank the Columbus Home and School for this excellent program.
Thank you to Mrs. Manion for another excellent Winter concert which showcased our band and chorus.
Thank you to the Columbus Home and School for another wonderful Breakfast with Santa which is always well attended and eagerly anticipated by our students.
Sincerely,
Glenn Kershner
Principal

AM Drop Off Procedures Reminder
Research shows that punitive discipline may have unintended negative consequences, special education professor Lee Kern writes in this commentary. Kern advocates for a tiered support approach to discipline, focused on education and intervention.
School Goals
Below are the three goals I set for the year. We have completed the pre and mid-year testing and are currently analyzing the data to inform our instruction and measure growth.
Goal # 1: STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT: Students in Grades 3-6 will show growth in mathematics proficiency as tracked through a pre/mid-year/post assessment.
Evidence of completion will include a pre and post-test data analysis reflecting a 15% increase in the average score for Grades 3-6.
- Students took a pre-test in September and a mid-year benchmark in January
- Teachers completed item analysis for number correct and incorrect for each question to inform instruction
- Scores were tabulated and growth was analyzed
- Students needing additional support were identified
Goal # 2: STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT: Students will show growth in writing levels as tracked through a pre/mid-year/post assessment. Evidence of completion will include a pre and post-test analysis reflecting 85% or more of students in Grades 3-6 will improve by 1 or more gradations on the district developed scoring rubric. Students that score at the highest level on the pre-test will maintain that score over the course of the year.
- Students took a pre-test in September and a mid-year benchmark in January
- Teachers scored the writing on a rubric to analyze growth and inform instruction.
- Students needing additional support were identified
Goal #3 – STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT: Students will show growth in Reading based on the Benchmark Assessment Test. Evidence of completion will include a pre and post-test analysis reflecting 80% or more of students in Grades 3-6 will be on or above grade level by the year end assessment. Students that score at the highest level or above grade level expectations on the pre-test will maintain that score over the course of the year.
- Students' reading levels were assessed at the beginning of the year
- Teachers assess students throughout the year using formal and informal evaluations to monitor progress and inform instruction.
- Students needing additional support are identified.
