Defer Dragon's Burning News
September 29, 2017
Our Defer community is AMAZING! Your generosity supports school programs, subscriptions, apps, technology, and much more for all students at Defer. Students celebrated reaching 75% of the fundraising goal this week with Backward/Inside Out Day! More classes earned a pizza party and one class earned a popsicle treat for doubling their fundraising goal.
The Defer Fun Run is next week, Friday, October 6th! Next week is our final week before the Fun Run and donations can be turned in until October 13. Friday, October 6th is a Defer School Spirit day and students should wear their Defer Shirts. If your child is new to Defer and has not yet received a shirt, please stop in the office. The schedule for the Fun Run is listed below and we hope to see many of you on the Defer Field supporting our Dragons!
- Young 5's , Kindergarten, and 1st Grade: 2:15 - 2:35 pm
- 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grades 2:45 - 3:15 pm

- To celebrate all of the hard work and dedication from the Defer community, the PTO is hosting a Family Outdoor Movie Night. October 6th (the evening of the Fun Run), on the Defer field. We'll be showing "Sing" starting around 6:30 pm (dusk). Popcorn will be available, and please bring your own chairs, blankets, and beverages.
- The last day to make donations to students that go toward Fun Run prizes is October 13th. We still have fun prizes to win, including a Nerf Wars party for the top 20 fundraising families, sponsored by The MAC - Mack Athletic Complex.
I look forward to seeing many families in the afternoon for the Fun Run and/or the Family Movie NIght next Friday!
Have a wonderful weekend!

Leader in Me Parent Survey
Our school is implementing a whole-school transformational process called The Leader in Me, which teaches 21st century leadership and life skills to students and creates a culture of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader. Starting today our school will be conducting surveys to learn more about key areas of strength and areas of needed growth in our school. The data from these surveys will also help us track the impacts of The Leader in Me process and implement key practices more fully. In order for us to have a holistic picture of what is going on in our school we are asking all full-time staff members, parents/guardians, and students in grades 4 and up to participate.
If you decide to participate, you will be asked to complete a survey (without sharing your name or other identifying information) that will be available through a web link we will send out until October 12th. The survey is completely voluntary, but we do hope to get feedback from one member of every household. The parent/guardian survey takes about 12 minutes to complete and will ask questions about your child and about his/her experience in our school. If you have more than one child attending the school, you will be asked to think about the oldest child’s experiences as you answer questions related to their growth.
