The OWL Newsletter
Otto Petersen Elementary School
Dear Families,
On behalf of our staff here at Petersen Elementary, we are so excited for our reopening next week on Monday, March 8th! Although it will look differently, with our beloved students split into two cohorts, we are thankful to have students back in our building and classrooms. If you have not done so, I ask that you please take some time to view our videos that provide you with information and expectations on specific procedures and changes within our building. These videos are available on our Facebook page, our school website, as well as in this newsletter below.
We know that transitioning into another change is never easy, especially when there are so many moving pieces and parts to consider. If your child is moving to a new teacher starting next week, please take comfort in knowing that our staff has collaborated to ensure that this transition is smooth, welcoming, and positive for your children!
We are looking forward to seeing many of you next week. For those of you remaining in CDL, we are excited to continue to serve you virtually with daily connection and instruction! Thank you for your continued support, understanding through these weird times, and for allowing Scappoose School District to serve your family through our schools. Happy March!
Respectfully,
Jenneca Crocker

Emotional Learning Check-ins
We want to share about a new virtual check-in system that we plan on implementing to support emotional wellness at OPE.
This platform is called CloseGap and combines mood tracking, self-guided emotional regulation activities, and sharing so kiddos feel supported and you have peace of mind.
All students in Comprehensive Distance Learning will use it daily.
Students who are in the Hybrid model will check in on asynchronous (work from home) days.
Students can use CloseGap to check in with their emotions and identify if they need to speak with an adult or choose from a library of self-guided activities to help them build and practice coping strategies.
If students indicate they are struggling and need additional support, their teacher, counselors, and administrators will be notified and follow up with them to check-in.
Please be on the lookout for a CloseGap email that will ask students to set up their accounts.
Daily routine: As we move to a different schedule in the next week, start creating a daily routine for students to maintain the structure. Creating a routine that can support a successful transition back to school.
Create a sleeping schedule that encourages your student to get the recommended 9 to 12 hours of sleep within a 24 hours period of time.
Establish a nightly schedule to encourage a stress-free morning.
Get up early. In the morning, ensure that everyone wakes up with more than enough time to get everything done.
Plan breakfast. Have them plan what they want the evening prior.
Have backpacks at the door ready to go.
If you are going to hybrid learning, your schedule will change: You will go to school 2 days a week. The other 3 days a week, you will access your work online independently. This might feel different at first. Here are some tips that can help you find success:
- Creating a routine at in-home learning days will help students keep organized and on top of their learning.
- Use the calendar in canvas to see what assignments you need to complete.
- Attend office hours at 2:20-2:50 pm. The link will be available on your canvas.
- Email your teacher for help
- Keep a positive attitude!
I will continue to have Lunch Social Groups on zoom, and we will: have lunch, play games, and socialize. Starting March 10th, the new times are all via zoom available on the counselor canvas page.

Canvas app for parents
As we are nearing our transition into Hybrid and reopening, we wanted to remind parents that you have access to view your student's assignments, missing work, and class calendar in Canvas! In order to do this, you must download the Canvas App and use your Synergy ParentVUE User ID with "SP_" in front of it. For example, if you have ParentVUE login of "JSmith" your Canvas login will be "SP_JSmith". Be sure you are on the Scappoose Canvas site: https://scappoose.instructure.com/
We encourage parents to download and utilize the app to maintain an up-to-date view of their child's work and academic progress. If you have any questions or run into issues with the login process, please reach out to the Scappoose School District IT Department at ssdit@scappoose.k12.or.us
