Join the Glocester Libraries Summer Reading Program! Get involved in our fun programs, special events, and find great books to read! Here are the steps to join:
- Sign up online at glocesterlibraries.org for our Summer Reading Program. Sign ups begin Thursday, June 21, at 10 a.m.
- Pick up a special Summer Reading packet at your home library, either the Glocester Manton Library or the Harmony Library.
- Register online for the great Summer Reading events happening at both libraries.
- READ!!!!
Children's Summer Reading Programs
Plant, Cook, Eat
Monday, July 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, 1 p.m., Glocester Manton Library
July 2 – Growing Sprouts, July 9 – Growing Avocados, July 16 – Edible Flowers,
July 23 – Rooting Mint, and July 30 – Sunflowers
Age Level: 7-11 years old
In this multi-week program, children will get their hands dirty planting and studying a variety of plants with snacks afterward. Each child can take a plant home and watch it grow over the summer. Note: Please register for each week separately.
Tot Lot Tuesdays
Tuesday, July 3, July 10, July 17, July 24, and July 31, 10:30 a.m., Harmony Library
Age Level: 1-4 years old with caregiver
Join us for this six-week series: an outside story time with books, music, and favorite rhymes followed by playground fun! Feel free to bring your picnic lunches and stay as long as you would like. Note: We will read and play indoors in inclement weather. You only need to register once for all the classes.
Pals with Paws (one-on-one)
Monday, July 9, 6 p.m., 6:15 p.m., 6:30 p.m., 6:45 p.m., Glocester Manton Library
Age Level: 6-10 years old
Don’t let summer slump bring your child’s reading down. Let them practice their reading on a friendly, certified therapy dog. Children are invited to read a book of their choosing to a dog for 15 minutes. The dog will love it and your children will practice reading in a comfortable and non-judgmental environment. It’s a win-win!
Spiral Tie Dye
Tuesday, July 10, 11:30 a.m., Glocester Manton Library
Age Level: 8 years old and up
Bring your t-shirt and create a tie dye masterpiece. We will be using “Rit”dye, elastics, and our fingers to do lots of twisting. Note: This gets messy, so dress accordingly!
The Magic of Russ DeSimone
Wednesday, July 11, 10:30 a.m., Harmony Library
Age Level: 5 years old and up
Join magician Russ DeSimone and his bunny, Presto, for an interactive, high energy magic and comedy show. The magical surprises will be sure to please both children and “children at heart!”
Rockin’ Musical Instruments
Wednesday, July 11, 18, and 25, 2 p.m., Harmony Library
July 11 – Rain Sticks, July 18 – Thumb Piano, and July 25 – Castanets
Age Level: 7-11 years old
Libraries Rock is our theme and rockin’ instruments we will make! In this multi-week program, children will make a different musical instrument each week and explore the sounds each instrument makes. Note: Please register for each week separately.
Playdoh Pals
Thursday, July 12, July 19, July 26, and August 2, 10:30 a.m., Harmony Library
Age Level: 2 - 5 years old
Children will be encouraged to explore using different colors of Playdoh and Playdoh utensils in this six-week series. Playdoh is a fun way to entertain children and also a great way to build fine motor skills. You only need to register once for all the classes.
Punk Rocks

Age Level: 10 years old and up
Calling all artists, doodlers, and designers! Create a one of a kind masterpiece on ocean scrubbed flat rocks, using sharpies and paint.
Rising Sun Jiu—Jitsu
Monday, July 16, 2 p.m., Harmony Library
Age Level: 10 years old and up
Get up and moving as Rising Sun Jiu-Jitsu of Johnston gives teens an introduction to self-defense. Teens will learn skills that will boost their confidence and demonstrate discipline. This is an energetic, hands-on class that, weather permitting, will be held outside.
Schmitty, the Weather Dog
Thursday, July 19, 1 p.m., Harmony Library
Age Level: 3-8 years old
Schmitty the Weather Dog, has been on Ellen DeGeneres and on stage with Oprah, and now this yorkie with a nose for the weather is making his way to the Harmony Library. Musical Meteorologist Ron will bring out real life Schmitty and lead children in fun sing-alongs that will teach them about the weather.
Circus Dynamics

Age Level: 3-9 years old
Circus Dynamics will leave you amazed and mystified as they juggle and perform balloon magic. After the show, children will have the opportunity to attend a balloon twisting workshop and make their own balloon masterpiece.
Roger Williams Park Zoomobile

You don’t have to make the trek to the zoo, the zoo is coming to you! Roger Williams Park Zoomobile is coming with animals from the rainforest.
Bubbles, Bubbles, Bubbles
Tuesday, July 24, 11:30 a.m., Glocester Manton Library
Age Level: Ages 3 years and up
Children are invited to join in the bubble fun with Ms. Nancy and our Teen Volunteer as we explore bubbles as an art form and as a science experiment using various materials provided to us by the 4-H Educational Resources at the University of Rhode Island.
Graphic Novel Book Club
Thursday, July 26, 4 p.m., Harmony Library
Age Level: 7-12 years old
Each month, children will pick up a book from the graphic novel series of the month at the Circulation Desk. At the end of the month, we'll discuss the series over snacks. Children will be encouraged to talk about the books, draw the characters, or discuss other great graphic novels. July’s graphic novel series selection will be Big Nate by Lincon Peirce. Children can read any of the books in the Big Nate series.
Bwana Iguana Reptile Adventure
Friday, July 27, 2 p.m., Glocester Manton Library
Slither into the mysterious world of reptiles. Ray Ward is bringing his famous reptiles for a hands-on, fun, and educational show.
Mermaid Masterpieces
Wednesday, August 1, 3 p.m., Glocester Manton Library
Age Level: 10 years old and up
A Best of RI Award Winner, Mermaid Masterpieces gives teens step-by-step directions on painting their own masterpieces that then they take home.
Teen Programs
Teen Volunteer Community Service Opportunity
Harmony Library and Glocester Manton Library
Teens are invited to join us as summer volunteers with the Glocester Libraries. Volunteers are needed to help out at library programs and serve as mentors to younger children. Call the libraries and ask for Michelle Miranda at 949-2850 or Nancy Steere at 568-6077.
Safe Sitter Class

Age Level: 11-14 years old
Learn child care essentials, the basics of child development, infant and child CPR, care of a choking child, and more. A $50 check, made out to Miriam Hospital, is due at registration.

Need help creating our updating your resume? Attend this one-on-one workshop. Bring a written draft of your resume and a USB flash drive to save and/or print your resume.

Career Exploration Workshop

Are you thinking about a new career or want a career change? Do you need to practice for an occupational exam? With your library card and access to the Glocester Libraries’ website, you can explore careers, take practice exams, and prepare for graduate school admission exams at your own pace. At this one-on-one workshop, learn how to register for an account, find the resources for your quest, and advance your career goals.

Drawing Hands Workshop
Wednesday, July 11, 6 p.m., Glocester Manton Library
Learn how to capture the form and gesture of the hand with local artist and retired art teacher, Paul DuHamel. In this workshop, students will gain the skills needed to approach drawing hands with confidence. All materials will be supplied.
Painted Mason Jar Craft
Monday, July 16, 6 p.m., Harmony Library
Learn how to paint a simple summer theme on a Mason jar. After the paint is set, enjoy your jar for cold beverages or use it as a vase! No special skills are needed, and the library will provide all materials. There is a $3 materials' fee for this program. Note: Advance registration is required and space is limited. This program is suitable for adults and teens (14+).
Crochet Group

Beginners and crocheters that are more advanced are invited to learn and share their experience in a comfortable room for crochet and conversation! Ashley Ledoux, an experienced crocheter, will teach beginners and be available for assistance and advice.

Haunted Libraries of New England

Join us for an evening with author and paranormal enthusiast Charlie Harrington as he describes the history and hauntings of several New England libraries including a few in Rhode Island. My Near Death Experience: A Message of Hope
