The Scoop on 4th Grade
with Miss Lejsner, Mrs. Napoleoni & Mrs. Smith
December 21, 2018
Dear 4th grade parents,
We would like to thank you all for your continued help and support in the education of your children. We have truly enjoyed this first half of the year and look forward to a wonderful 2019! Just a few things to keep in mind for 2019: homework is mandatory in all subject areas. The daily homework expectation is math and WEB reading minutes. Weekly homework expectations include the cold reads, spelling words, and test prep. If your child does not complete their homework the strategies and skills can be very challenging to understand. Please continue to help your child develop these good study habits.
We hope you all have a enjoyable and memorable holiday with your families. See you next year!
Curriculum Corner
Reading & Writing
We've been keeping warm, the last couple of weeks, by reading some great books! We learned about Sacagawea and how her life experiences led her to be a leader on Lewis & Clark's expedition. Everyone enjoyed some Patricia Polacco holiday books. The students shared important values to have during the holiday season and recognized some of these values in the books that we read.
In writing the students have been understanding the importance of hooking their readers with a strong lead, and transitional and sequence words to help organize their published pieces. If we haven't already, we will be finishing our opinion pieces after the break.
Math
Wow! We are becoming excellent at solving word problems with multiple steps and equations. It helps to think about what the information is telling us, and what we are trying to solve for (our unknown variable). We will test on this unit after the break, so keep practicing those word problems!
Science/Social Studies
Welcome back, how was your trip to the Northeast region? We are so impressed with how well everyone did on the chapter 4 and state/capitals tests. Way to take studying seriously. We are so proud of you!
In science we just started, or will be starting, our Magnetism and Electricity Unit. The students first investigation involves predicting which materials would be attracted to a magnet and then testing to see if their predictions were accurate.
