LYNX Ambassadors Reflect on Positive Experiences
Flexible Scheduling
Fifth Block has helped me earn more credits this school year which will help me in the long run of my high school education. I am also taking online Health which is starting soon and I am finishing off CDM, these two LYNX initiatives are also helping me by allowing me to do other classes that may bring up career choices. - Rachel, grade 9
I started my school year off enrolled in the staggered schedule which allowed me to come in later and stay for Block 5. I have taken advantage of both first and second learning lab to help me get caught up on assignments as well as participated in different on-campus experiences and an off campus experience to Towson University. These experiences have made me a better student, by allowing me to be flexible with my schedule and help me manage my course-work easily, and has started to prepare me for college. - Dominic, grade 9
Learning Lab
Learning lab helped me catch up in classes and work on my final for an online class. This was helpful. - Amanda, grade 10
Learning lab offers a distraction free place that you can go if you need extra practice with a teacher or need to make up a test. - Taylor, grade 9
LYNX Experiences with Partners
The LYNX Experience to AstraZeneca was the first time I really got to see what I wanted to do in the future - or more specifically - what I did not want to do. I found that the scientific research and lab work being done there was not as enticing as I thought it would be, however the experiences later that year with the FMH Junior Volunteer program (something that I was able to join and am still involved in) as well as the trip to the hospital itself really helped clarify that healthcare and clinical work was something I found great passion in. Due to that clarity early on, I was able to take part in the Academy of Health Professions program at Frederick by pushing for it via LYNX and am on course to get my CNA/GNA come next year. - Chris, grade 11
Through LYNX I have taken field trips to AstraZeneca, Frederick Memorial Hospital, Ritas Italian ice, and the Hirshhorn Museum, just to name a few. I have also participated in college visits to Georgetown University and George Mason University, as well as occasional visits to the learning lab. One of my favorite experiences was helping with the LYNX partnership appreciation program that was hosted at the end of last year because it allowed me to give back to my community and network with influential people. - Jalynn, grade 10
The LYNX experiences are important to me because they help me find who I want to be in the future. I think they help myself and peers get an insight in to different career fields and schools that we are interested in. By going on the LYNX experiences I have learned about several occupations' day-to-day activities and was able to go on a college visit. I really enjoyed going to Towson and being able to walk the campus along with a tour guide that was a current student that knew the ins and outs of the school as a whole. - Kendall, grade 9
One of the LYNX experiences that was really impactful to me was the trip to Yakabod, which allowed me to explore the work environment of a software development company. We got to ask lots of questions about what they developed, how they developed it, what sort of schedule they stuck to, what education they had, and what sorts of jobs they carried out. For example, there were certain people who were responsible for actually developing the code, while others worked on formatting and graphic design. I felt that the experience gave me a lot of exposure and allowed me to explore this as a possible career path. - Carly, grade 9
