Message From Mr. Holcombe
As we leave September, we want to continue to keep focus on the strong start we have had and keep focus on why we will continue strong. Relationships and strong work ethic are what will lead to a great school year. We are focusing daily on both!
I am so very pleased with the parental help and support we have had in the form of volunteers. However, I am also very excited about the other important forms of support...the most important forms. Those show up when you reinforce the concepts we are working with your children on and when we are able to support the concepts you are working on at home. Some of those include:
Strong work ethic
- Completing all work each day to the best of your ability
- Working through reasons why doing work is hard without allowing excuses to be made
- Finding that the goal of learning is often related to struggle and work ethic
Taking responsibility for actions
- Working to focus on what “I” did before even entertaining what another did
- Realizing that we are not “bad” because we make mistakes, but instead own our
actions, make amends and try not to do the same thing again
Attendance
- realizing that learning is best accomplished in an environment of other learners and that it is possible to attend and learn even at times we don’t feel the best
Thank you for supporting us in these things and we will work to continue to reinforce the character building concepts you are instilling at home. We certainly understand that there are things that are taught at home that may not show up here from time to time and that there are things taught here that may not show up at home from time to time. However, in supporting each other, all of our children benefit. Again, thank you for all the ways you support our endeavors!
Have a great day! Sincerely,
Tim Holcombe
Oregon Branch Library Partners with Ike
We are very excited about pursuing relationships in our area with businesses and organizations. Partnering gives the opportunity to reach out into the community beyond our doors while still supporting those in the Eisenhower community. In addition, we are able to gain insight and help from other organizations.
Our first partnership this year will be with the Oregon Branch Library. Kate McGown will be joining us during lunch time several times this year to share information with our students. Her first session was on Friday, September 22nd and she did a book talk with students who are interested in historical fiction.
What we would like to do, in conjunction with the library, is to ensure all of our students have a library card. This is an excellent opportunity as students can check out books, movies, cds, etc.
On Friday, September 22nd we sent home a form with each child to have parents fill out. If you filled one out for your child at Open House or Schedule Pick-up, please disregard. If you did not, please fill out the form and return it. The library would like you to do so even if your student already has a card. This will reset their account and forgive any fines, update the information, etc.
We are very thankful for the willingness of the Oregon Branch Library to partner with us this year!
6th Graders Wash Their Way to Camp
The sixth grade students had a busy day on Saturday, September 15th. Approximately 70 students and their parents combined to make one great car-washing machine. In six hours the group washed 102 cars!
The car wash provides students with two meaningful opportunities. First, the car wash is an opportunity for students to learn the importance of working for something that they want, instead of having it handed to them. Second, the money earned enables students to participate in one of the great sixth grade traditions . . . a trip to camp! This year Eisenhower sixth graders are attending camp the last week of November and the first week of December.
Mr. Holcombe, the students, and the sixth grade staff of Eisenhower realize that we are truly fortunate to live in a community in which so many organizations and people are willing to support us. We would like to thank all the people who were kind enough to bring their car(s) through the car wash. You all play a significant roll in helping send our students to camp! Thanks again!
Sincerely,
The Sixth Grade Teachers
5th Grade Band Announcement from Mr. Kuzdzal
We will hold an important informational meeting Oct. 3 and 4 at 6:00 in the band room at Eisenhower. If your student has an interest in being in band this year, please plan on attending this meeting to learn more about our program and how you can go about renting an instrument for your student. We are currently in the process of fitting interested students for instruments and will continue to work through these fittings. Please know that not all fittings may be complete prior to the meeting and any student who is interested in band should plan on attending this meeting, even if he/she has not received a letter about his/her fitting. We look forward to seeing you there!
Ike's First Movie Matinee a Success!
We had an excellent first Movie Matinee! Thank you to all the parent volunteers and teacher volunteers who helped provide an excellent afternoon for our students as they watched Boss Baby on Thursday the 21st. Teachers from 5A and 6A put a lot of work into making the afternoon such a success. Thank you to Mrs. Walters for her coordination of the event. Congratulations to Corinne Serres who was the winner of the movie!
These types of events are times for students to get to know others that they are not in class with every day. Our next Movie Matinee is November 16th. We will remind you as we get closer, but we hope to have even a greater turnout at our next event.
