A Note from the Athletic Director
If your 7th or 8th grade student is planning on participating in any Middle School sports for the 2015-2016 school year, a physical card is required (signed and completed by a doctor). However, if your student already has a physical on file with the school office from the 2014-15 school year, another physical will not be required (physicals are valid for 1 year from the date of the exam). Instead, we will need an Alternate Year Card (signed by the parent authorizing participation in sports).
Please contact the office with questions. The required forms are available in the school office if needed.
Thanks,
Steve Olenchek

Science Olympiad Update
In addition to all of the great activities that Platteville Middle School offers our students, from athletics, to music, to the performing arts, we’re also incredibly proud of the students who take part each year in Science Olympiad. Even though Science Olympiad may not have the glitz and glamour that a basketball or football team may bring, Science Olympiad offers students a glimpse into world of science and engineering at a level that they may not experience in the everyday classroom. Here at the middle school we just completed the first of three phases of our annual competition. The first phase was the school competition, which took place during late November and the early part of December. This phase is the “proving ground” to determine who advances to the second and third phases of competition, which is regionals and state. We had over 20 students from 6th through 9th grade take part in the school competition, which tested not only their scientific knowledge, but also their problem solving and critical thinking skills. The events ranged in everything from designing and testing wooden gliders to comparing parts of the human muscular system. But in the end, only 15 students will make the regional and state roster. So, without further adieu, I give you this year’s regional and state Science Olympiad team:
6th Grade:
Cooper Gassman
7th Grade:
Jacob Bell, Daisy Gatch, Sarah Iselin, Mikael Rohou, Caleb Wright, Brandon Wu and Kohler Zuehlke
8th Grade:
Phoebe Baker, Isabel Bowers, Grace Deis, Josh Kieckhafer, Jacob Sherer and Aubrey Swenson
9th Grade:
Quinn Collins
For everyone that took part in the school competition this year, I send my appreciation to you for your hard work and dedication in advancing your knowledge of science. A special thanks also goes out to the parents of these students who undoubtedly invested their time, energy, and sometimes even their pocketbooks, to help their children succeed. Stay tuned for the results of regionals and state, coming up in February and March!
Sincerely,
Mr. Olenchek
8th Grade SciencePlatteville Middle School Spelling Bee 2015
On December 10, 2015, the annual Platteville Middle School Spelling Bee was held in the school commons at 7:00 P.M. Five students from each grade level, fourth through eighth grade, competed until only one competitor remained. However, five of the student competitors and one alternate will continue to compete at the sectional spelling bee held this year at Riverdale Elementary/Middle School on Tuesday, January 26, at 6:00 P.M. The sectional finalists will advance to the Dubuque Telegraph-Herald Bee.
This year’s top five winners were Lexi Shea (5th grade), Jacob Bell (7th grade), Abby Williams (5th grade), Meagan Hall (5th grade), and Melanie Wood (7th grade). The alternate is Abby Gatch (5th grade). The overall winner at the PMS bee was Melanie Wood.
Congratulations to our top five finalists! Great job to all students who participated; what a suspenseful competition! Also, thanks to all staff, parents, and community members who came out to support our students; each of you made it a special occasion for the students. Good luck to those who will go on to represent our school and town! Go Hillmen!
The Gift of Life
Blood donors help save lives, will you give?
I'm scheduling donors for our upcoming blood drive and want to invite you to help save lives by giving blood. The Blood Center can produce multiple products from every whole blood donation. Watch this video (http://www.bloodcenter.org/about-us/featured-events/featured-video.aspx) to see how donors make a difference for patients in our community. If we get enough donors, Platteville Middle School will receive an education grant. Please save lives and support our school.
