This Week 📚
Here's what we focused on this week.
Reading: This week in reading, we completed our first author study. We read several stories by Tomie dePaola (one of my favorite authors!). He is the author and illustrator of these books. Some of these stories were based on his life, while others were fictional stories. We noticed many different things that Tomie dePaola did in his books. We learned that authors make decisions for what to include in their books and how they include those things.
Writing: This week, we continued working on our memory stories. The students worked hard to stretch their stories to add details as they wrote. We also worked on adding detailed illustrations that match the words we wrote.
Math: This week in math we worked on solving two-step word problems. We applied everything we learned about solving one-step word problems to help us solve these types of problems. We also have to read these problems carefully in order to decide if we should be adding or subtracting. Since these problems have two steps, we need two equations to solve them.
Social Studies: This week, we learned about different types of jobs. We learned that the physical environment affects the types of jobs we can do. A fisherman needs to live near the ocean and a farmer needs to live in a place with lots of flat land.

📌 Reminders
Nightly Homework
Each night your child should read for at least 10 minutes and practice math facts for at least 5 minutes. A great way to practice math facts is using XtraMath.
In second grade, we work on mastering our basic addition and subtraction facts from 0-18 so they become automatic. Practicing facts for a few minutes every night will help us reach this goal! If you need flashcards, here are some that you can print and use at home.
Dismissal
Remember to use the PikMyKid app/website for any dismissal changes. I will be checking this each afternoon as verification for how each child will go home. Please make all changes before 2:45 PM.
