MCKINLEY STEAM ACADEMY
October 9, 2020
NOTE FROM MR. MARTINEZ
Hello McKinley Families,
Yesterday you received communication from our district office informing you of the updates to returning to McKinley STEAM Academy. The plan is for McKinley students to start on-site on Monday, November 16. This is only for families that have requested the "In-Person" option. The students in the "Remote Learning" option or CRVA will continue with virtual learning.
As you know, the district has given families until October 12 to change their learning option. We are assuming that nearly all of our "In-Person" families will opt to remain in that option and to physically return to McKinley on November 16.
However, I want to make sure you have full information related to our safety measures. I offer this information only so you have full and accurate information related to the return to our building.
1) Masks will be required. There will be very few exceptions. If your child is unwilling to wear a mask, their best option is to switch to the Remote Learning option.
2) What happens with a positive case? Our School Nurse will conduct contact tracing to see if any students are considered in "close contact" with the infected student, as defined by the governor's guidance. Because we must adhere to FERPA rules (privacy rules around medical information), we will not be releasing the name of any Covid positive individuals, their grade level, classroom, etc. However, if your student is considered in "close contact", you will be contacted by the school nurse with information about quarantining.
3) How much will cohort groups mix? Very little. Students will remain with the same group of peers throughout the day, including lunch. Instruction will be delivered through a combination of live instruction and recorded/remote instruction by teachers in our building. More details will follow in the coming weeks.
As always, please let us know if you have any questions related to our return to on-site learning. We appreciate your patience and support and are looking forward to the return of our Bears!

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS
McKinley Students! Do you want to participate this school year in the “Battle of the Books!” We are teaming up with Swamp Fox Bookstore in Marion. If you want to participate; please contact Mrs. Amy Gardner at agardner@crschools.us to tell her which books off this list you are most interested in. We would like each person to read at least 4 books off the list so when the “battle” happens we have people who can answer the questions pertaining to a variety of books.
We will have fun activities and book talks leading up to the competition in early 2021. So there is plenty of time to read books off this list. If you have already read some of the books, they count.
