4th Grade Happenings!
Math- This week we learned about square and rectangle arrays. We discussed square numbers and have been working hard on our multiplication facts, we decided that if we don’t know a multiplication problem that making an array will help us solve it!
Reading- Next week we are looking forward to visiting our local libraries on Monday. We plan to visit Scranton (Murphy) , Jefferson (Fish and Haley) and Grand Junction (Eberly). The librarians are going to ask us to write book reviews for books in the library that other kids/adults can read to see if that is a book they might be interested in. This should be a fun way to work on our persuasive writing skills too.
5th Grade Happenings!
Lit/SS: In reading we have finished up our work on comparing and contrasting two or more characters, settings, and events in text. We will be moving on to determining two or more main ideas in a text and identifying supporting details. In social studies we have begun our work on writing a flag essay for the American Legion contest.
Keep reading 20 minutes each night!
Science: We have completed our reptile study and have started to learn about birds. Reading Explorer Magazines from National Geographic have really helped increase our learning about many animals including snakes and chameleons.
6th Grade Happenings!
In reading we are finishing up our argumentative paper and our government unit. This week we took a lot of time to talk about the election process. We will be starting our culture unit on Monday. Keep reading 20 minutes a night!
In science, we are finishing up our Earth science unit. Students did some independent research on topics that interest them. We will also continue to look at resources.
In math, we are working on multiplying and dividing decimals. Some students are moving on to Algebra.
Music News!
Things are coming together for the upcoming 5th and 6th grade Winter Concert on Tuesday, December 5th. It will be held at the Greene County Middle School Gymnasium at 7:00 p.m. We would prefer students dress nicely for this concert. Please try to avoid t-shirts, sweatshirts and jeans with large holes. This concert is videotaped and aired on the local television station as well as on TheCube.com. We look forward to sharing a night of musical entertainment with you.
4th Grade General Music has begun learning the first lessons on recorder. The students are excited and this makes learning fun!
Don’t forget , Thursday, December 8th, Vocal Trash will be entertaining our community at the Greene County Middle School at 7:00 p.m. Hope to see you all there! This is a wonderful family-friendly program geared toward recycling!
Physical Education
First of all, I was very proud of how the students behaved themselves while we were in Ames last Friday. What an eye opening day for all, they now have a feeling what college is going to be like. The anti bullying presentation was fantastic and the ISU girls game was icing on the cake. I want to thank Mrs. VanCleave for making this event happen, what a great experience.
Special Education News
4th graders have finished writing about their special place on the chromebooks. In math they are taking assessments on geometric concepts.
5th graders in math are starting to learn about division
6th graders in math, are learning how use order of operations using fractions. In reading, they are continuing on learning about argument. We have been reading an article that has been making them think beyond the surface and are getting to pick a side a support it with evidence.
Band Business!
The bands are right on track to meet our deadline for the December 5th concert. For the parents that have never been through this before, the concert is at 7, but students need to arrive at 6:30 so they can warm up and tune. Dress code for the concert is just “nice clothes” whatever that means to your family. We’d prefer no t-shirts or jeans if possible.
Counseling News
In Life Skills we are learning more about problem-solving and conflict resolution. Students are becoming awesome solution-finders!
Our recent trip to Iowa State University has sparked some great conversations about future educational goals. I’m loving hearing the comments and seeing the excitement in our kids’ eyes as they talk about seeing campus on Friday, and they can “see” themselves going to college. I want to thank Mrs. Van Cleave, ISU Admissions, Marketing, Event Staff and even ISU students for making it such a great experience for our students. Go Cyclones!
Cyber Safety…
Social media and texting safety are major issues in our cyber-smart society.
A 14-year-old Marion County, Iowa, student was recently charged with sexual exploitation of a minor or child pornography for sending suggestive photos of herself to a boy. She and her family are now trying to stop the prosecuting attorney, Ed Bull, from filing criminal charges in this sexting incident.
Much of the time tweens and teens use the Internet and their phones responsibly. However, we need to continually talk with our kids about safe and respectful use of social media and texting. Here are two timely articles for parents and educators to read about how to talk with your kids, and apps to be aware of that kids may be using. Let’s keep our kids safe.
Talking to Kids and Teens About Social Media and Sexting: American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) states that it is imperative that parents talk with their children of all ages about social media and monitor their online SM ...
“Not everything online is evil, nor does danger lurk behind every new app that comes to market. But keeping up with your teens’ and preteens’ online activities is much like trying to nail jelly to the barn door — frustrating, futile and something bound to make you feel inept.”
Ann Brenhoff, Huffington Post
