Principal's Message
How many different ways can you figure out the solution to 16x70 without writing anything down? My son was doing a Dreambox lesson recently, and one of the questions was to type the solution to 16x70. Luckily there were several problems he did prior to this problem that helped him figure out the solution! If I was asked to figure out 16x70 in my head, I'm not sure I would know where to start! If you haven't had a chance to sit down next to your student and watch him or her solve different tasks in Dreambox, I would encourage you to take just 10 minutes to do so. The visual supports are so powerful, and the program helps students develop a range of strategies for similar problems.
Here are a few reminders about Dreambox:
1. The program was designed so that students can complete all of the tasks and problems without writing anything down. Students should be able to use mental math strategies along with the visual supports on the screen to figure out each solution. If your children are writing things down on paper, they aren't maximizing the power of the program.
2. Dreambox expects children to make mistakes. The mistakes are helping the program figure out the best next steps for each individual user. For example, I watched my son make an error the other night, and the next problem was a more simplified version. Once he answered that problem correctly, the next set of problems were more challenging. I could tell that the program was making sure my son didn't have a hole in his understanding.
3. Do not help your student answer correctly. You can ask clarifying questions, encourage them to look at the pictures, or explain to you how they found their answer before typing it in. But if we don't allow mistakes, the program will ask questions that are too difficult and cause our children to become frustrated.
4. Ideally students spend enough time on Dreambox (without frustration) to complete at least one lesson. If they start another lesson, they should try to finish that lesson before exiting the program. If they exit before completing a lesson, they just need to start over on that lesson next time, but the program has still learned about their skills and will adjust to their needs.
I hope you enjoyed thinking about numbers in a different way. If you need some tips for figuring out 16x70 in your head, check out the last article below. And please take a few minutes to observe your student using Dreambox!
Kind Regards,
Christy

Unscheduled Early Dismissal - What's your plan?
During an unscheduled early dismissal, schools will use the emergency closure plan you indicated for your student in enrollment and enrollment verification. During the online process, you were asked to indicate what the student should do in case of emergency or early school closure.
You were only allowed to choose one option. The three options were:
- Pick up by Parent/Emergency Contact/Daycare
- School Bus to Home/Neighbor/Daycare
- Walk/Ride Bike/Drive to Home/Neighbor/Daycare
If you don’t remember what you selected, you can check by logging into ParentVUE and clicking on “Student Info” in the left hand navigation. Your selection will be displayed at the bottom of the page under “Other Data.”
If you wish to change this plan, contact your school or reference the “Online Registration/Enrollments and Verifications Guide.” *Please note, if you choose to update your information online, the information is not updated in the student information system until the school has accepted your verification. This process may take up to two weeks to be completed. The fastest way to update your information is to call the school.
Please make a note of the option you selected and keep the information somewhere handy, in the event of a future early school closure.

Organics Collection on the Rise
Nutrition Services and custodial staff at Hazeldale, McKay, Oak Hills, and Terra Linda elementary schools signed up for the back of the house organics collection effort this fall. These schools bump up the number of participating schools to 31! The goal is to have all schools participating in the program by the end of the school year. Through the efforts of Val Bako, Field Supervisor with Nutrition Services, Washington County and City of Beaverton attended a Nutrition Services Lead meeting in September. The back of the house program was explained and staff had an opportunity to ask questions. Ms. Bako has also paved the road for un-served food to reach local food pantries working to eliminate hunger in our communities.
Attendance is a Priority at Terra Linda!
Every day students are missing valuable instruction time by arriving late and departing early. It is important for your student and all students in their classroom that they are on time and ready to learn each day. Please do all possible to arrange appointments after school or on non-school days.
We will be sharing this attendance information with you regularly. Thank you for helping your student be in school and on time each day!
16x70
So, did you figure out different ways to figure out 16x70? Here are just a few:
1. Think about 16 as 10+6. Then figure out 10x70 and 6x70 and add the two results together.
2. Figure out 8x70. Then 16x70 is just double the answer to 8x70.
3. Figure out 20x70. Then, subtract 4x70 from that number.
4. Figure out 16x10. Then know that there are seven groups of 10 in 70. Add 160 together 7 times. But now you get to think about how many different ways there are to figure out 7 groups of 160? The possibilities can go on and on!
