Hamilton County Extension
Summer 2023
A 9-member Extension Board and a 12-member youth and adult 4-H Council representing all areas of Hamilton County are also a part of our Extension team. It gives us great pleasure to serve you in your quest for learning or keeping up-to-date in this ever-changing world.
2023 Hamilton County Fair
4-H prefair entries are due July 10th. This is where you tell us exactly what exhibits you are bringing to the fair- like the zinnias you grew, the animal you trained, or the rocket you built. You can find the forms for prefair entry on our website or you can go to https://hamilton.fairwire.com/ and do your entry online.
Our fair website contains a wealth of information. The Hamilton County 4-H Fairbook can be found there as well as Animal Requirement Charts (to help you know what you have to do and when), and 4-H Forms, data tags and supporting information forms.
Exhibitor packets (your exhibitor t-shirt, entry tags and back tags) will be ready for pick up at the Extension Office from July 18-21.

Drought Damage to Lawns
Drought Damage in Trees
Just as drought has caused havoc in many lawns, we’re also seeing damage in trees. Even very drought tolerant trees like eastern red cedar and Colorado spruce have extensive damage or have been killed completely.
Death of branches or a whole tree are very obvious and visible effects, but drought can also cause damage in more subtle ways affecting trees and other woody plants for several years to come.
In a well-hydrated soil, the open spaces between soil particles – called soil pores- are filled with 50% oxygen and 50% water. When dry, clay and loam soil may still contain some water, making the soil feel cool and somewhat moist, but this water is held so tightly by soil particles that it cannot be pulled up by plants. This remaining water is not available to plants.
