Healthy Snacks Reminder
We encourage students to bring a healthy snack to sustain them and to keep their brains fueled. We are noticing that some students are bring candy and other sugar-filled treats for their snacks and although they taste good, they do not fuel their bodies for long. Eating too much added sugar can have many negative health effects. An excess of sweetened foods and beverages can lead to weight gain, blood sugar problems and an increased risk of heart disease, among other dangerous conditions. If you are sending a snack, please consider some healthy options like those at this website: 85-snacks-for-kids-and-adults:
Traffic Control
Traffic control in school area is a highly sensitive subject. First and foremost, remember that our primary concern is the safety of your children. We know that your time is a precious commodity, but if the choice is between a few minutes saved and a life lost, the perspective becomes clear.
We should set a good example by always following the traffic safety rules. Children learn by example. A driver is always responsible for safety, even if (when) pedestrians act foolishly. Children are the second-most likely group to be injured in automobile/pedestrian accidents.
Please remember:
- Children can be picked up and dropped off only in designated areas. (Front of school: in the morning- Preschool only. In the afternoon-Kindergarten and siblings only.)
- Children should exit/enter on the curbside of the vehicle and only in designated zones. Children are not allowed to cross the street/parking lot to reach the vehicle.
- Our drop off/pick-up lane is one way. Please pass carefully when pulling out.
- Never leave a vehicle unattended when picking up or dropping off children. Violations present a danger and cause congestion.
- Children should obey the directions given to them by teachers on duty. This includes crossing in designated areas only when directed, not running or riding bicycles at crossing or in the drop off/pick-up area and being alert for traffic.
- Consider carpooling to reduce the number of vehicles near the school.
- Never get out of the vehicle to fix your child’s backpack, tie their shoelaces, to give them a last kiss goodbye, etc. please make sure you take care of all these details before you leave the house to help with the traffic flow.
From the Nurse's Office: Flu Season
By: Elizabeth Conpiseno, RN
Arizona already has diagnosed cases of the flu this season. Symptoms of the flu can include a high fever, body aches and pains, extreme exhaustion, chest discomfort, headache, nasal congestion, sneezing, a sore throat, and a dry cough. The best way to help prevent the flu is to get your yearly flu vaccine, cover your cough, wash your hands thoroughly, and stay home if you’re sick.
The flu vaccine is recommended for everyone ages 6 months and older. If you have concerns if the flu vaccine is appropriate for you or your child, speak with your healthcare provider. The flu shot is a dead virus and cannot cause the flu. There can be mild symptoms after receiving the flu shot that can include a sore arm, being tired, achy, and feeling as if you have a mild cold. These symptoms are significantly milder than the symptoms caused by the flu.
The flu vaccine is changed on a yearly basis to try to cover the flu strains that are thought will be most prevalent for that flu season. The vaccine is not 100% effective, and it is still possible to get the flu even if you’ve gotten the flu shot. However, research has shown that the symptoms are likely to be much less severe with fewer complications with the flu shot.
It can take 2-4 weeks for the antibodies that fight the flu to build up in the body after receiving the immunization. Therefore, getting your flu shot early is important. Both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend the flu vaccine by the end of October. Please see the included flyer for locations that provide free flu vaccinations, regardless of insurance coverage. For more information on the flu, please visit www.whyimmunize.org
