Senior Students explore gravity in real time: Grade 11 Physics classes climbed to the roof to investigate the effects of gravity, air resistance and air currents in the Guzzo Yard on October 19. A variety of objects were dropped from the roof (tennis balls, several sizes of steel balls, and finally a watermelon). Students measured the height of the building and fall times to calculate the acceleration of gravity. The variety of objects helped the students compare the effects of shape, surface area and mass on the object’s overall acceleration. Read more.
Great Halloween Fun: Bananas, aliens, dinosaurs and creatures of all kinds appeared at school for the Halloween celebration. Senior students led the always popular Haunted House for elementary students in Mr. Downey's basement. Middle and Senior School students dressed to impress for their costume competitions and gobbled up a ghoulish toxic lunch. Carved pumpkins, decorated classrooms and doors put everyone in the spirit. Movember During the month of November, students will be engaging in activities and assemblies that help them gain an understanding of mental health and give them an opportunity to get their questions answered. The Prefects will be providing weekly assembly content to support this initiative and will share more information about activities as the month progresses.
Community Engagement Update for Senior School
In an effort to align our community engagement initiatives with our Veritas focus per grade level, we have organized our programming with an emphasis on education and awareness, along with purposeful fundraising. Please see below for specific details on the learning and projects per grade level.
Grade 9: Holiday baskets: Each advisory group (TAG) will support two families assigned to them by Saint Gabriel’s Parish. Similar to previous years, towards the end of November, students will be asked to sign up to bring in specific food items based on their assigned family’s needs, as well as $20 to contribute towards gifts for each family member. Please encourage your son to go to the grocery store and purchase the items himself, and to get involved by wrapping gifts, making homemade goodies, or delivering during the week of December 12-16. We are always looking for parent volunteers to drive/deliver so if you have a car and some free time after school the week before exams, please contact Michelle Segal. A special thanks to our student leaders who are helping to ensure each advisory group is organized and on task!
Grade 10: Winter clothing: In addition to the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) program that the Grade 10 students are participating in during their ERC course, we have also arranged for all grade 10 advisory groups to be part of a winter clothing collection in partnership with The Nazareth Community, an organization that provides temporary housing for those struggling with mental health compounded with addiction, trauma and/or homelessnes. This program will take place in February.
Grade 11 service days: Grade 11 students will experience two community service days where they will have the opportunity to venture out into our Montreal community, choose a social issue that is near and dear to their hearts and volunteer for an organization that is working towards solving that social issue. The service days take place on January 11 and April 20.
Duke of Edinburgh: A reminder to all students pursuing their Duke of Edinburgh (DOE) award that your deadline for submission to receive an award in January is December 10, 2022. If you need help logging your hours or have any questions, Ms.Segal is available for one-on-one meetings and support. Here are her drop-in hours: Monday/Wednesday/Friday from 1:00 - 1:45 pm in the Mac Mezzanine.
