DestinationCollege2020
Crosby Scholars Junior Newsletter, May 2019
Our Mission
We will assist public middle and high school students in Forsyth County in preparing themselves for successful college enrollment.
Our Vision
We seek to ensure that every public school student in Forsyth County has the opportunity to attend college.
This newsletter, DestinationCollege2019, is published in August, November, February, and May to keep you informed of activities, deadlines, and program opportunities. It is your responsibility to know deadlines and program requirements, so read your newsletter and log in to your Crosby Scholars Student Portal regularly to find out all the latest information.
There are also Crosby Scholars Program requirements you may begin or complete over the summer:
- Mandatory Senior Meeting - the one-on-one meeting with a Crosby Scholars Summer counselor to make sure you are on track. To be prepared for this meeting will need to bring your target list of colleges, SAT and/or ACT scores, a list of people you wish to write your letter of recommendations, and a draft of your activities resume.
- Community service - you can submit your form verifying your 2+ hours of community service for the 2018-2019 school year. The deadline is January 31, 2019.
- Crosby Scholars Academy - each senior must complete two (2) academies to fulfill the Academy requirement. Over the summer we will begin hosting academies on various topics to help you get a jump start on your college applications. Please continue to check your emails and log in to your Crosby Scholars Student Portal to see when the dates and topics are announced.
- College fair/college visit - To fulfill the college fair/college visit requirement, Crosby Scholars must speak with four college admission reps about their respective schools. Students typically fulfill this requirement by attending one college fair and submitting a college fair form; however, juniors and seniors may fulfill this requirement by visiting four college campuses.
Juniors saw 7 different college campuses!
During the Winston-Salem State tour, students received a walking tour of campus, got to sit in a classroom with new, ergonomic desk chairs, and heard from students on a panel. During the panel the Student Government President stopped in and the students were allowed to ask him questions. They even received a word of encouragement from the Director of Student Activities.
Special thanks to all universities for allowing us to visit during our time off. College tours continue to be one of our most popular events for juniors. If you did not have the opportunity to attend a college tour with Crosby Scholars Staff, you can plan college tours with your family, or do a virtual tour of many college campuses on You Visit.
The summer is a great time to grab your parents and go on a tour of colleges to which you are interested in applying. Whether you step foot on campus and fall in love, or not, the experience will help you determine where your home will be for 2 or 4 years after graduating. Make sure to take the College Visit form with you and have an admissions representative or tour guide sign your form (only official on-campus visits fulfill this requirement).
ARE YOU READY: AP Exams
Finally, although you have already completed registration, you can use this course overview of AP classes so you know what to expect going into next year.
Colleges like to see continual upward trends in the rigor of your course selection. So, if you took AP courses this year, the expectation is that you will continue with the most rigorous course load you can handle and still be successful. Continue to challenge yourself, and all your hard work will pay off in college credits!
Congratulations to our Cultural Awareness Scholarship Winners!
Congratulations!
Neil Williamson - Atkins Academic & Technology High School
Eric Augustine - Atkins Academic & Technology High School
If you are interested in these opportunities, or if you've never been to the opera before, make sure to participate in the next Cultural Awareness opportunity in the fall. The information will be posted in your Crosby Scholars Student Portal, on our website, and sent via email.
Receive Senior Academy Credit as a Junior!
As you are beginning to wrap up your Junior year, we want to help you stay on track and remain focused for all that lies ahead as a Crosby Scholar Senior. As a reminder, to receive Senior Academy credit you must arrive on time, check in, and stay for the entire session. You must also complete a confirmation of attendance prior to leaving. Any student who skips any of these steps will risk not receiving academy credit.
May 19 - Take the ASVAB with Crosby Scholars
We at Crosby Scholars believe strongly in the ASVAB’s value for clarifying strengths and interests that might direct you toward a major area in college or toward a specific career field. Although branches of the military use ASVAB results to determine training assignments, it is NOT a recruitment tool, and the information gathered from the assessment has value for students fully committed to post-secondary education. Register now through your Crosby Scholars Student Portal. You can earn one Crosby Scholars Senior Academy credit!
Planning to take the SAT or ACT again?
SAT
Use your PSAT or SAT score report to link to test prep through Khan Academy. Watch this short video for more information on College Board + Khan Academy. Watch this video and download the Daily Practice App, for iPhone and Android to take SAT Practice tests and get one SAT question per day.
ACT
ACT Academy is a free online learning tool and test practice program designed to help you get the best score possible on the ACT test. Finally, you can use this information from the ACT to better understand your scores and the information on your Score Report.
Test scores are important if the schools you are interested in are not test-optional, but always remember, you are more than your test score! Admission officers will use a variety of factors to determine acceptance, and they are looking for students who bring something special to the campus community. So, prepare prior to taking any admissions tests, and be sure to highlight your strengths through your application to really standout.
Find All Your Scores In One Place: Linking your ACT Scores
Now that you have received the scores from the ACT you took on February 27th, you need to connect them to a new or existing online account. This will be the only way for you to register for your next test if you want to take the ACT again, access and view all of your score online, and prepare to send them electronically to colleges when you apply for admission in the Fall.
Follow the instructions that apply to your situation:
If you have NEVER created an ACT Online account, and NEVER took the ACT prior to the test in March:
1. Go to www.ACTstudent.org
2. Click on “Sign Up” in the student web account box
3. Click “create Account”
4. When asked: “Have you registered for the ACT before?”, click NO
5. When asked: “Have you taken the ACT before?”, click YES
6. Enter the requested information
7. Enter your ACT ID number found at the top of your ACT Score Report
8. A message will indicate that your scores have been found and have been connected to this new online account
If your scores are not found, go through the process again to be sure you have entered everything correctly, as your data must exactly match the data on your Score Report. If the scores are still not found, call the ACT office for help.
If you created an online ACT account and took the ACT on your own before taking it on February 27th, OR if you never took the ACT before February 27th, but then created a new online account after taking the test in February without connecting it to your February 27th test, then you must call the ACT office and ask them to pull your new scores from the Feb. 27th test date into your existing account. You cannot do this yourself through an online account, and do not create another account.
