Idea Spinner
Grades K-12
Big Idea
The teacher has a spinner separated into 4 quadrants, each with a different icon from the Depth and Complexity Chart. At the end of a lesson, spin the spinner and ask students to summarize their learning, for example.
Directions
1. Create a spinner with 4 quadrants: Use any of the 4 Depth and Complexity icons
2. At the end of a lesson, spin the spinner and have students respond orally or through writing based on where the spinner landed.
3. Spin again!
When to Use
At the end of a lesson, check in with kids by spinning the spinner and asking questions. Teacher can have kids summarize their learning, or the teacher can ask more specific questions around evaluating, predicting, and explaining.
This formative assessment can be used for any topic with any lesson.
Variations
If you want information from each student, create a 4 quadrant box on a sheet of paper with the topic in the middle. The teacher spins and then all students respond through writing and/or pictures.
Instead of having words such as summarize and evaluate, include the depth and complexity icons to add more flexibility and depth in thinking.
