Southwestern Earns Performance Qualified School District Distinction
Southwestern Consolidated School District of Shelby County has received the status of a Performance Qualified School District for the 2018-2019 school year by the Indiana Department of Education. Southwestern is one of fifty-five corporations in Indiana to receive this status. Southwestern Consolidated School District of Shelby County will be implementing this status by not requiring students to attend an additional snow make up day added on at the end of the school year. Southwestern teachers will be required to attend an additional professional development day to fulfill their contracts.
In order to be eligible, a district must receive an A rating from the Indiana Department of Education for the previous school. The Performance Qualified School Corporation program is in state statue:
IC 20-30-2-2 requires that the instructional day for grades 1-6 consist of at least 5 hours of instructional time, and the instructional day for grades 7-12 consist of at least 6 hours of instructional time. However, a school that is eligible for the performance qualified school program may exercise some flexibility around these instructional time requirements.
IC 20-24.2-4-2 provides that a performance qualified school corporation does not have to provide 180 student instructional days so long as the total number of instructional minutes provided in a school year meets the required timeframe.
For grades 1-6 that looks like 54,000 minutes of required instructional time (5 hours * 180 days = 900 hours * 60 minutes = 54,000 minutes)
For grades 7-12 that looks like 64,800 minutes of required instructional time ( 6 hours * 180 days = 1080 hours * 60 minutes = 64,800 minutes)

Abby Sweet to implement community Project
Abby had to first, identify an issue, investigate it thoroughly, get help, build a team, create a plan, and present her plan and get feedback. She had to interview with the Central Indiana Girl Scouts to have her project approved. Abby's Gold Award project, in coordination with the Edinburgh United Methodist Church and Edinburgh Parks and Recreation, is to participate in the summer Food Service Program (SFSP). Through advocating for donations, Abby will be able to feed families from Edinburgh School District and Southwestern Consolidated School District. Meals will be free of charge for children 18 years of age and under and to persons over 18 years who are enrolled in a state-approved educational program for mentally or physically disabled. Abby will also design games and materials to promote a healthy lifestyle and a special treat for participants.
Abby will implement her project beginning June 5, 2018 and continue until July 26, 2018. Abby has completed training at the Indiana State House as part of her preparation for this summer. For more information, please contact Sherri Sweet, 317-729-5300. Congratulations, Abby! We are proud of you!
