A Few Words from the Principal
This week our students had the opportunity to learn from our veterans.
Not too long ago, we had some students and staff notice that there was a flag flying that was very weathered and needed replaced. 7th grade Social Studies teacher Mr. Webb reached out to the American Legion and Thursday two veterans from the American Legion Post 327 came and helped our Trailblazers learn about the history of the flag, how to fold the flag, and how to properly dispose of the flag. This was an awesome opportunity for our students made possible by them speaking up and realizing something needed to be done.
What came next was my favorite part of the day. The veterans had the opportunity to share their stories and answer questions that students had in grade level groups. It was awesome to see our students interacting with the veterans.
Both of these opportunities that our student had this week to engage and interact with veterans were amazing experiences. Seeing all of our students wearing their red, white, and blue today and actively listening and participating with our veterans makes me very proud to be a part of the MTMS family.

USD 232 "Night of Jazz"
The MTMS jazz band will be performing at the USD 232 “Night of Jazz” on Wednesday, November 16th at 7:00pm in the DeSoto High School Performing Arts Center. Jazz bands from every middle and high school across the district will be performing so this should be a fun night for jazz music! This concert is free for the public!
All MTMS jazz band members need to be at DHS by 6:30 to warm-up and tune. The dress for this performance is the new black band t-shirt, black pants, and the darkest shoes and socks possible. Jazz band members are in charge of getting their instrument and music to DHS that evening. (Guitarists need to bring their own amp and chord.)
From Student Council
StuCo is organizing a Soup-er Bingo tournament on Thursday, November 17, from 3:15-4:15 in the commons. Bring in one can of soup for the De Soto Food Pantry, and we'll give you bingo cards and popcorn. We hope to see you there!
Also, thank you to our school community for another great Socktober drive! With your help, we collected 655 pairs of socks for the homeless shelters at City Union Mission.
From the Nurse
Illness
The transition to chillier weather often comes hand-in-hand with cold and flu season, but healthy habits can help protect everyone from getting or spreading germs. As we enter cold and flu season, we appreciate you encouraging these healthy habits with your children.
- If you have a child who is sick, we ask for your support by keeping them at home. Students and staff must be fever-free for 24 hours without the use of medication, and free of vomiting and/or diarrhea for 24 hours before returning to school.
· If your student is diagnosed with Influenza (“the Flu”) or with COVID, they must remain at home for 5 days from the onset of illness, with return on day 6.
- If you have questions about your student’s health, please contact your school nurse. Additional information regarding health and wellness is available on the district website.
- Remind your child of important preventative measures for any illness, such as coughing into the sleeve, frequently washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and getting plenty of rest and fluids.
As you know, the health and safety of our students and staff is a top priority. Our school staff will continue to stress preventative measures, and our custodial staff will continue to follow appropriate cleaning procedures to ensure common areas shared by students and points of high contact are disinfected. Thank you for your support.

Attendance
When reporting your student absent due to illness please leave a brief description of symptoms such as stomach issues, headache, fever, strep, flu. It helps to track illnesses in our building and reporting to health department if needed.
Spelling Bee
Spelling bee season is here! MTMS students compete in classroom and grade-level bees, school and league bees, and the Johnson County Bee as part of the Scripps National Spelling Bee program. The first rounds will take place in ELA classes later this month. Check your ELA teacher's Canvas page for a list of words to guide your study.

From Publications -
Hey parents - the Publications crew needs your help! We are looking for photos of your student(s) doing the following:
- Students unwinding after school (playing a sport, hanging with their friends, doing arts or crafts, playing video games, etc)
- Students getting involved in the community (volunteering at a shelter, working at church, raking leaves for a neighbor, etc)
- 8th graders learning to drive or a photo of them with their permit
Also, it is difficult for us to get to wrestling tournaments and all the basketball games, if you have some photos to share that would really help us out.
