Debate Team News: COVID restrictions haven’t slowed the debate team. Charles Seitz won Top Quebec Speaker at the National Debating Seminar. The seminar was held online by Zoom, and hosted by the Saskatchewan Elocution and Debate Association. The Canadian Student Debating Association sponsors and helps to organize the event. Because the theme of the seminar was Indigenous rights, Charles received a Talking Stick as a prize for his honour. Yusuf Afif (Gr. 9) also represented Selwyn House at the seminar. Read more
Recycle your Old Mobile Phones! Students can bring (still-functioning) phones that you no longer use to a box outside of Coristine Hall or to a box outside of Ms. Wong's office in the Macaulay Building until October 29. Montreal-based company, ElectroBAC, will pick up the devices, wipe them clean of any remaining personal files and data, and refurbish them. Through their Phone it Forward program, the CNIB (Canadian National Institute for the Blind), will securely donate our used mobile devices. Our donations will help to reduce electronic waste and provide new phones to blind and partially sighted Canadians!

Academic Success – Attention & Notetaking: Academic success begins in the classroom. Paying attention in class, taking notes, active listening, and keeping course materials organized are the supporting skills to learning a subject. The majority of a student’s learning occurs in class during teaching instruction and activities. No doubt, it is challenging to maintain focus during a zoom class, but it is imperative that students listen actively, take notes, and engage with the material.
Note-taking is crucial and an essential skill at postsecondary institutions. Note taking can improve retention and understanding of course material, particularly when students summarize and interpret the information they are learning. It has also been found that taking notes long-hand is more effective than typing them on a laptop, although the important part is to focus on and engage with material. If students like to doodle, then they can sketch images, pictures, and mind maps related to the new concepts. To ensure understanding, another effective technique is to summarize the important points of a lesson. Ideally, this is done in the students’ own words. The summary may be written, sketched, or a concept map.
As parents, you can help by asking to see your son’s notes from class. If he doesn’t have notes, find out what he needs. Does he need binders, paper, notebooks, or extra pens and pencils? Where does he keep the handouts he receives? Teachers do put a lot of material in, OnCampus, but students still need to organize their binders and notes.
