February is American Heart Month
Eat healthy foods: A healthy diet that is low in sodium and saturated fat is key to heart disease prevention. Try the highly rated Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) eating plan. It recommends: ● Eating vegetables, fruits, and whole grains ● Eating fish, poultry, beans, nuts, vegetable oils, and fat-free or low-fat dairy products ● Limiting foods that are high in saturated fat and sodium ● Limiting sugar and other sweeteners
Reduce stress and improve sleep: Stress can contribute to high blood pressure and other heart risks. Not getting enough sleep or regularly getting poor quality sleep increases the risk of having high blood pressure, heart disease, and other medical conditions. Aim for 7–8 hours of sleep a night.
Black History Month
February is Black History Month; Carter G. Woodson was at the forefront of shedding light on African Americans-whether it be their accomplishments or struggles. Carter G. Woodson decided to pick February in honor and recognition of Frederick Douglass, who escaped slavery, became a civil rights leader, and was part of the abolitionist movement along with President Abraham Lincoln, who signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
Our first black President Barack Obama stated the importance of acknowledging and celebrating Black History Month, he said, "It’s about the lived, shared experience of all African Americans, high and low, famous and obscure, and how those experiences have shaped and challenged and ultimately strengthened America. It’s about taking an unvarnished look at the past so we can create a better future. It’s a reminder of where we as a country have been so that we know where we need to go."
