The Knightly News
Parent Newsletter - April 2022
Principal’s Message
Hello Knight Families,
Spring Break will take place April 11-15. April 8 will be an adjusted dismissal day for all students. You can find the adjusted schedule here. Please note that students will be dismissed at 11:30 a.m. We are rapidly approaching the conclusion of the 21-22 school year, as April 18 marks the beginning of the fourth quarter. Please continue to monitor your students’ progress in the Parent Portal, and reach out to their teachers or counselors if you have concerns.
Spring sports and activities are in full swing and we have enjoyed many successes earning accolades in forensics, mock trial, and Virginia Teachers for Tomorrow competitions across the state. Our performing arts department produced a magnificent and very entertaining rendition of SpongeBob the Musical for our feeder pattern schools and our community.
We are also proud to announce our PTSA Volunteer of the Year, Mr. Thomas Scott from the STIHL Corporation, for his countless hours of working with our students. Additionally, we honored Mrs. Julia Schwenke, English Teacher at Kellam High School, who recently completed her We are thankful for her dedication to improving her craft so that we can provide a high-quality education for every student. We are also proud to announce that our very own Barabra Donecoff was announced as the School Nutrition Association Employee of the Year Award. Finally, Coach Mike Benzel was also inducted into the Virginia Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of fame.
PTSA Volunteer of the Year
National Board Certification.
School Nutrition Association Employee of the Year Award.
We truly have some of the best and brightest staff and students here at the Castle, and we know that your support plays a significant role in our success. Speaking of success, our faculty basketball team was victorious, and we want to thank all of the parents who came out to support the event, including OneLife Fitness for providing the Faculty T-shirts. The students gave a valiant effort but ultimately, the faculty team prevailed.
As we set our eyes on the fourth quarter, we aim to finish strong. There are many exciting events taking place including spring sports, ring dance, prom, and graduation. There is also much work to be done. AP exams, SOL tests, and final assessments require a focused effort as students prepare for advancement to the next grade level, college, military careers, or entry into the workforce. Through our partnership, we can ensure that every student meets their goals. Please continue to encourage that students are present and punctual for class and that they are diligently completing assignments and preparing for assessments. It is Knight Time! I hope you enjoy Spring Break and that your student returns with a focus on a strong finish to the 2021-22 school year. Please do not hesitate to reach out about what supports your students may need to be successful. Ryan C. Schubart, Ph.D. Principal

AP Testing in May
Exam Schedule
AP exams will be administered at Kellam from May 2 to May 13, 2022. The testing schedule with locations can be found HERE. Students should review their exam schedule in their Total Registration account for any possible changes to testing locations as we get closer to testing.
Please note the arrival time for morning exams is 7:15 a.m. and afternoon exams is 12:00 p.m. Students must be on time so that we can begin testing on schedule. Students who arrive after testing begins will not be admitted to the test.
Attendance and Transportation on Test Day
Students are excused from classes on the day of their exam. You may choose to transport your student to and from the test that day, or they may drive themselves if they have a parking permit. However, if a student rides a bus, they must attend classes when not in testing.
If you are picking up your student after testing, you may refer to the exam timing HERE to approximate their completion time. Please allow for about 30 minutes more than the actual testing time.
On Test Day
Students should bring multiple pencils, multiple blue or black pens, and any SPECIAL EQUIPMENT (calculators, rulers) allowed for that exam.
Students taking a foreign language exam must bring their fully charged chromebook and a charging cord.
Cell phones are not permitted in the testing room. All phones will be collected and stored outside of the testing room for the duration of testing.
While a regular watch is okay and encouraged, students are encouraged NOT to wear a smart watch. They will also be collected and tend to be harder to distinguish during pick-up.
You may click HERE for a more detailed list of what to bring and not to bring to testing.

Inclusivity: Celebrating Women History
All great things have an origin story and Women’s History Month is no exception to this rule. Born in the community of Santa Rosa, California, in 1978, this important phenomenon started out as Women’s History Week during the Month of March. The Education Task Force of Sonoma County (California) Commission on the Status of Women designed and implemented a program about the great achievement of women. This week was devoted to showcase the triumphs of great women in history that deserved to be celebrated for their accomplishments. As this event morphed into Women's History Month, it became a time to reflect on the bravery of women in past generations and to commend how their determination and courageousness provided women the opportunities and liberties they have today.
During the month of March, Kellam High School reminded the student body of some of the great women who have contributed so much to the advancement of humankind. We celebrated women of the past and acknowledged the present-day Lady Knights. Women all over the castle were highlighted during the month. They were presented with certificates and their pictures were displayed acknowledging them as difference makers. Women have always been strong contributors to society whether through great accomplishments in literature, medicine or education or by being the backbones of their family. Women’s History Month gives a nod to the fact that every woman should have the opportunity to allow her greatness to shine and be acknowledged for her contributions.
Questions to ponder/Conversations with your child:
1. What are some great female role models that you can share/discuss with your child?
2. Why have female contributors to society been overlooked and undervalued?
3. What are some benefits for promoting Women’s History Month?
