NWJH April Newsletter
April 2017
Letter from the Principal
Dear Parents -
This trimester, we will be doing Parent/Teacher Conferences a little differently. Instead of parents going to the MPR and waiting in line to meet teachers, we will schedule appointments for parents to see teachers on a first come, first serve basis. Parents can sign up for 5 minute conference slots. If parents need more than 5 minutes to conference, please email the teacher to set up a meeting outside of conferences.
Parents are encouraged to contact teachers with questions or concerns as they arise, and need not wait for conference time to express their concerns. Teachers are available for individual conferences year-round.
Parent/Teacher Conferences for the third trimester will be held from 4:15 to 7:30 PM on Wednesday, April 19, 2017.
Format for Evening Conferences:
All conferences will be held in teacher classrooms, and will include periods for both drop-in and pre-scheduled meetings:
4:15 - 5:15 PM Drop-In 5 minute conferences
5:15 - 5:30 PM 15 minute break
5:30 - 7:20 PM Pre-Scheduled 5 minute conferences
There will be sign-up sheets outside each classroom so that any parents unable to meet with the teacher by the end of the drop-in conference period can sign up to have the teacher contact them by phone or email.
To Schedule a Conference:
Secretaries will be scheduling conferences Tuesday, April 11th and Wednesday, April 12th between 9:30 AM and 3:30 PM. You can call the office at 319-688-1060.
We look forward to meeting with you at P/T Conferences!

Pancake Breakfast
CALLING ALL ELEMENTARY, JUNIOR HIGH & HIGH SCHOOL FAMILIES: PANCAKE DAY IS COMING!!!
The annual Pancake Day is a critical fundraiser for the athletic department at North Central, Northwest and Southeast Junior High. Our Jr. High and High Schools received over $30,000 from the District Booster Club for Stadium Cleanup and Pancake day this past year. 100% of that money went to the athletic program’s critical needs for supplies and equipment for all of our interscholastic sports. Money earned went towards new uniforms, practice equipment and field equipment. Tickets for the event can also be purchased at the door on April 8th. Thank you for your support!
You can also support us with a direct donation.

Open to all interested students! We meet on most Mondays, 4:05 – 5:00 pm. Bring your projects, fabric and have FUN. New friendships – camaraderie for all! Also, we collect box tops for education for our club! I’m looking forward to meeting you, Mrs. Hanes
Family and Consumer Sciences
Donations of lightweight cotton WOVEN fabric (novelty prints – cute designs or solids), thread, buttons, stuffing and interfacing are always appreciated. Soon classes will be: mastering the basic sewing machine; begin constructing bags and book covers; clothing care– be prepared your child will need to sort the family laundry and do at least one load from beginning to end. Meaning, pre-treat stains, read care labels, wash, dry, fold or hang up and put away! Your signature is required on the worksheet. Last but not least – Food & Nutrition Unit. Also, FCS classes collect box tops for education for our Sewing Club. Thank you, Mrs. Hanes
8th Grade Sewing Class
Donations of cotton flannel and polar fleece fabric would be appreciated. Currently, we are making 9-square pillow tops and students are learning how to operate the embroidery machines. Next, will be some type of bag – for example: drawstring backpack, purse or gym bag. Then students often work on hoodies or boxers. Each project develops new skills and techniques. A super productive class! Mrs. Hanes
Chess Club
The Northwest Chess Club participated in the Match Play Team State Championship at Prairie Point Intermediate School in Cedar Rapids, IA in February 2017. Northwest fielded three teams of four players and one of the teams, Viking Time (pictured), won the match play team state championship. Northwest also boasts the Individual Play Team State Championship this year as well as one individual grade state champion (7th grade). On Saturday, April 1st, Northwest will host the K-3 (Primary School), K-5 (Elementary School), K-8 (Junior High), and K-12 (High School) State Championships, the final IASCA-sponsored scholastic event of the school year. The team has an upcoming regional tournament in April, the Ice Harbor Scholastic Chess Open, in Dubuque, IA and plans to send representatives to SuperNationals in Nashville, TN in May.
*Chess Club meets on Tuesdays before school at 7:55 and there are many other optional activities through the year. Interested students can join at any time and don't have to know how to play - we can teach you!
MathCounts Club
Members of the Northwest Math Club competed in the Iowa State MathCounts Competition Friday, March 31, at Drake University. Northwest won the team competition over the other 26 qualifying schools. Competing teams had to qualify at one the eleven regional competitions held across the state in February. The winning team of four were Kevin Lu, Ananth Shyamal, Divya Shyamal, and Reece Yang. Northwest had nine of the top 16 individuals out of the 150 state qualifiers. Divya and Ananth placed second and third overall in the individual competition, and will be part of the four-person Iowa Team that gets an all-expense paid trip to Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL to compete in the National MathCounts Competition.
