When did it happen
It started in January !, 1862. Daniel Freeman, a Union Army scout, was scheduled to leave gage county in Nebraska Territory. At New year's eve party the night before, Freeman met some local land office officials and convinced a clerk. accelerated the settlement of the western territory by granting adult heads of families 160 acres.
