School to Home Connection
News for the week of January 13 - 17, 2014
What we are learning this coming week...
Math: We will be continuing fractions. Students will be practicing using the words one-half, one-fourth, and one-eighth. Students will be comparing fractions to learn and use the concept of more fractional parts means less of an equal share for each portion. Students are working on the vocabulary of fractions more than focusing on the number representations.
Reading & Writing: We are continuing our Culture Studies unit this week. Our students have been researching through Culture Grams (online resource), different cultural traditions from around the world. Each day, our class will focus on one country’s customs, fill out anchor charts, read various fiction and non-fiction books and develop an All About book on a favorite culture of study.
Science: This week will be an introduction to natural resources. Students will be learning that the natural world includes Earth materials and will be able to distinguish between natural and man made resources through a variety of learning opportunities. Students will be learning that natural resources come from the Earth and include; rocks, soil, air, and water. Students will be learning that man made resources are materials made from natural resources that have been changed by humans, including; glass, plastic, fabric, lumber, and paper. At home, please continue to support your child by learning the differences between the two types of resources.
Dear Parents,
Looking ahead to next week’s plans students will be learning the importance of conserving and reusing by creating an in-class project. Therefore, we will be collecting any rinsed containers, bottles, empty toilet/paper towel rolls, etc. for the project that you could spare. We appreciate your donations.
Grammar: This month, students will continue exploring nouns (common, proper, plural, singular, pronouns), verbs and adjectives.
