Apple and iPad Update
Good afternoon,
Apple will be releasing a new update to their iPad operating system, iOS 11, early next week. At this time, it is our recommendation that students/families NOT install this update. Our testing provider for ISTEP and IREAD, Pearson, has not approved this operating system for the TestNav app. Also, by waiting, it provides time for other apps that are used in the classroom to release their updates.
Once Pearson approves of iOS 11 we will inform you.
Thank you for your cooperation.

HPE Reads
Dear HPE family,
We hope you are enjoying reading The World According to Humphrey with your child. The teachers at HPE love the many discussions and excitement about the book throughout the day.
Our HPE Reads event is a program designed to create a shared reading experience across the entire school community. We want to spark a community-wide conversation on playgrounds, parking lots, classrooms, and homes. A conversation that is rich, involving hundreds of students and families, inspires a deep appreciation of literature and lifelong readers. It establishes a culture of family literacy. Reading aloud sharpens the imagination, creates healthy dialogue, and promotes a love of reading.
Harrison Parkway has planned many wonderful activities to support this Reading Initiative.

Counselor's Corner
Over the past couple of weeks, I have visited all grade levels and presented classroom guidance lessons. In kindergarten, I read the book, Personal Space Camp. We discussed what personal space means and why it is important. I used hoola hoops to explain to the students that the space within a hoola hoop if you are sitting or standing in it, is the amount of personal space you should allow for yourself and others at school.
In first and second Grades, I presented Second Steps lessons. The Second Steps curriculum is a social skills program. Our focus this first week was on the skills of focusing attention and listening. We learned about these skills and practiced these skills during our time together. In second, third, and fourth grades, I presented anti-bully lessons. We discussed the definition of bullying and strategies to use if a student or a friend is being bothered or bullied.
I enjoyed visiting your child's classroom and look forward to visiting again in the near future!
Sincerely,
Nancy Logue
Transportation Change During the Day
Occasionally, parents must make unplanned transportation changes during the school day. All telephone calls must be received by 2:00PM. This is to allow enough time to accurately deliver messages to teachers, as well as time to confirm the change if necessary. Please do not call the school after 2:00PM to make a transportation change except in the case of extreme emergencies.
HPE Cafeteria News
On Tuesday, September 19th we will be celebrating September Birthdays. Students who purchase a meal deal will receive a free Rice Krispie treat.
As a reminder, when sending money in with your child, please write on the envelope their first and last name and student ID number. Do not include nicknames.
Parents are welcome to join your child for lunch. Please follow the HPE policy of calling the front office before 9:30 AM (317-915-4210). Due to space limitations, we can only a maximum of 10 people per day. The office starts accepting phone calls at 8:00 am. Due to allergies and food sensitivities, fast food is not allowed in the cafeteria. We do discourage using cell phones while you are having lunch with your child.
If at any time you have any questions or concerns regarding your child's lunch, please feel free to contact me.

Volunteering and the Background Check Process
Parents/visitors to HPE must have a background check on file with the school (including watching the anti-bullying video and completing the video survey) in order to volunteer in the school or to have lunch with a student. The link for the background check information can be found on link below at: http://www.hse.k12.in.us/ADM/parents/volunteering.aspx
The background checks are conducted by a 3rd party company, and there is a $13.00 fee for processing (payable online at the time of the application). Once completed, approved background checks are valid for a period of 3 years. Applicants will be notified via email when their background check has been completed and they will also notify people 30 days before their background check expires.
Attendance Line Voicemail
If your child will be absent from school, please call the HPE Attendance Line by 9:00 a.m. at 915-4210. If you know in advance that your child will be absent, you may call the attendance line's voicemail anytime and leave a message. If you know your student will be absent for more than two school days for any reason other than illness, we ask that you complete a Prearranged Absence Form (available in the HPE office) at least one week prior to the absence. If you notify your child's teacher of an absence via email, you still need to contact the office (by phone or email) to ensure that attendance is marked appropriately.
Student attendance at HPE is vitally important. Please make every attempt possible to plan appointments and vacations outside of school hours. Regular attendance improves student performance and is expected as an integral part of our state mandated School Improvement Plan.

Response-to-Instruction (RtI)
RtI is a general education initiative designed to provide high quality instruction and interventions matches to student needs, and using learning rate over time and level of performance to make important educational decisions. The RtI model is based on a three-tiered model of service delivery with a focus on early intervention and prevention of academic and behavioral concerns. Data collected during this process provides valuable information regarding students’ educational progress and response to interventions. Students who do not demonstrate a response to well-implemented, scientifically-based interventions at the Tier 3 level would be referred for an educational evaluation to determine eligibility for special education. RtI is a component of HSE’s Child Find Process.

State Park Passes Now Available for Loan from the Library
With temperatures finally on the rise, thoughts are turning to the great outdoors and exploring all that Indiana has to offer. In honor of the state’s bicentennial, the Indiana State Library has now provided each library with a state park pass for loan to library cardholders.
When you are ready to hit the trail, simply stop by the Adult Services desk at either the Fishers or Noblesville Library and check for availability. Due to high demand, the passes will be available on a first come, first served basis, with no holds or renewals available. Passes can be checked out for up to 7 days.
Like other library materials, if passes are returned after the due date, late fees will apply. If passes are lost, a full replacement cost will be assessed. For further information, check out the library’s website at www.hepl.lib.in.us.
