Third Grade Water Ice Fundraiser
Our first lunchtime meeting, scheduled for the snow day we had this past Thursday (3/5), will be rescheduled soon.
To help our class get excited about the event, representatives from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) came into our classroom to discuss marketing, our class's assigned task. Through their presentation, we learned about the three things you can do with money (buy, donate, or save), the two terms that relate to budgeting (income and expenses), and even different ways to fund our ideas (loan from the PTA!). Students also brainstormed some ideas for marketing their water ice sale including posters, announcements, costumes, feature flavors, and word-of-mouth. It looks like they'll be having a lot of fun planning this event!

Check Out What We've Been Learning!
Readers Workshop: We've practiced three new skills in reading over the past few weeks. Children identified story structure in The Science Fair, they compared and contrasted character choices in the Native American folktale, Yonder Mountain, and they determined author's purpose in Aero and Officer Mike. For our study of author's purpose, we looked at the intended purpose of commercials and we realized that sometimes authors entertain us while they are trying to persuade or inform us. Children were then challenged to work in small groups and create a foldable on the author's purpose for a set of picture books. In each of the Journeys texts, children have been working to think deeply about the stories and use their writing skills to respond to open ended questions that we call "Digging Deeps". Children have learned to formulate an opinion and support their ideas with quotes from the text.
Math: We conquered learning about geometry in Unit 6. Children learned to find area and perimeter of irregular shapes, identify lines, line segments, and rays, find lines of symmetry, and identify properties of different geometric shapes. They also reviewed their understanding of decimals and multiplication word problems. In some ways, the Unit 6 test may have been our most challenging test yet, partially because of the multi-step directions. Children were completely responsible for reading directions and checking over their own work on this test! After Unit 6, we jumped to Unit 8 to expose students to fractions. Children have been learning to think of fractions like decimals, as part of a total. We've been learning to identify fractions on a number line and finding the fractional part of a total. Next we'll be learning about fractions greater than one!
Science: We're almost finished our study of chemistry. Children have tested our five unknown white chemicals by adding water, iodine, vinegar, and red cabbage juice. We've been working on recording our observations as chemists by using our four senses and only descriptive words. We've also been adjusting our predictions of what they five unknown chemicals are based on our observations. Soon we'll be heating our chemicals to see how they react!
Social Studies: Children have continued to work on their "Me on the Map" project by identifying different parts of their location in the world.

- Practice reading and answering questions with the "Stories - Reading Fiction and Nonfiction" icon
- Practice your facts! Use the "Fact Master" icon to practice your addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts. Students will start with a placement test which will assess which facts students need to work on most. Fact practice will then be based on individual student's current knowledge. Children have a limited about of time to answer each fact, which is excellent for practicing speed. When children answer a fact incorrectly, the correct answer will be explained to them.
