Cry, the Beloved Country
In Chapter 4, Kumalo was fooled into giving a young man a pound in order to buy a train ticket. However, the boy actually stole his money. This shows that Kumalo's easily trusting nature could be a weakness because he was quite gullible and lost some of his precious savings. In the future, gullibleness can lead to some considerable danger because there are many unkind souls in the world.
When Kumalo found his sister, she was in a great state of weakness. The woman had pathetically resorted to selling cheap liquor in addition to selling her own body. Gertrude had also been in prison, as well as lived in the slums, where the streets were filthy and trouble was constantly being caused.
