- This year the 4th graders are collecting donations for the Little Traverse Bay Humane Society for the Christmas season. I would love it if every student could send in an item off their wish list. People from the Humane Society will be stopping by the week before break with some doggie visitors and to pick up donations. Here is a link to their wish list: http://www.ltbhs.com/support/donate-supplies.
- We will be having our Christmas breakfast and movie on Dec. 22. Mrs. Liddy has volunteered to organize the breakfast and supplies and may be calling you to help out.
- The permission slip and payment for Camp Wolverine is due on Friday, Dec. 16. Please let me know if you have any questions about camp.
Language Arts
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child's report card and grades in language arts. We also took the NWEA for reading and writing on Thursday and Friday. I will be using this information to guide my instruction now that the first trimester is over. If you'd like a copy of your child's NWEA scores sent home next Friday please email me. akilar@harborps.org
Reading: This week in reading we focused on drawing conclusions when reading fictions texts. We talked a lot about how we can support our conclusions with evidence from the text.
Writing: We started talking about persuasive essays. We read a few persuasive texts and talked about audience, issue and evidence in the story. We also write daily in response to our reading.
Grammar: We are working on compound and complex sentences. We spent a lot of time learning about when to use commas with coordinating and subordinating conjunctions.
Math
Science and Social Studies
Social Studies- Please feel free to contact me regarding any questions you may have on your child’s Social Studies or Science report card. Students took an open book check up on what they had learned about the different groups of people that have come to the United States and the contributions they made to our country.
Science- We started a lesson on plant parts used for reproduction. Students are learning about the different ways plants reproduce through flowers, cones, and spores. We will be looking at real plants next week to identify the different parts used in reproduction.
