Course Information

ELA Unit 1 is reading and writing summarizations and comparisons of different Cinderella Stories. Students will be exploring different cultures through these stories. After each story, have your students practice writing a paragraph (4-8 sentences) summarizing the story. Encourage your student to include the following

  • Characters (good and evil)
  • Setting (where and when)
  • Events (beginning, middle, and end)

Brainstorm how each story could change to be more modern. Foster different names, locations, genders, and events. Maybe instead of a ball, maybe it's a talent contest. Practicing now will make the teacher graded assignment due on Sept. 1st much easier.

Books 4th graders will read these next two weeks.

These books are part of the K12 curriculum and were sent to every 4th grader at OVCA.

  • Yeh Shin
  • Adelita
  • Expeditions in Reading pg 8-16
  • Class Slipper, Gold, Sandal

Students will be learning about multiplication facts these first two units. It is vital for our fourth graders to know how to multiply. Division, fractions, perimeter, area, etc. are all built off of multiplication. There are many strategies out there to support your fourth grader in mastering this skill. 4th graders are expected to know multiplication facts between 0-12. This means they know from 0 x 0=0 all the way to 12x12=144.

Spend 20 minutes each school day working on multiplication facts this school year.

Multiplication Strategy- Double, Double

NWEA Screener Starting Monday. August 23rd.

The NWEA Map Screener is much like an eye exam. No one is telling you what to see, only you are telling the doctor what you see. In the same way, the NWEA MAP Growth assessment is an opportunity for students to state what they "see" in math and reading. The first score of the year sets the goals for the school year.

MAP Growth is a computer adaptive test created by NWEA that kids take two to three times per school year. The results provide teachers with information to help them deliver appropriate content for each student and determine each student’s academic growth over time. The results also set the goals for the school year specifically using the percentile rank. To measure one year's growth, a student should either increase or stay equal to the beginning of the year percentile rank.

Example: Linda scored a 205 which placed her in the 65th percentile. For Linda to make one year's growth and stay equal to the 65th percentile, she will need to increase her score to 217 by the end of the school year.

The NWEA MAP Growth assessment includes multiple-choice, drag-and-drop, and other types of questions. You can view the practice test below.

Teachers can use the score to inform instruction, personalize learning, and monitor the growth of individual students. Principals and administrators can use the scores to see the performance and progress of a grade level, school, or the entire district.
