Shark Bites
Shaull Elementary School Newsletter: December 15, 2023
Principal's Message
It certainly not too soon to think about school days impacted by the winter weather. Here at Cumberland Valley, we may utilize up to five Flexible Instruction Days (FID) due to emergency situations such as inclement weather. FIDs may also be utilized for other emergency circumstances during which students receive learning activities and assignments at home in order to provide for continuity of instruction. Learning activities and assignments will continue the classroom experience and allow us to avoid make up days.
Elementary school attendance on a FID requires the student to be present for the live, synchronous Morning Meeting (on Zoom or Teams) and they must complete the asynchronous work assigned by their teacher. In the event a student is unable to attend the Morning Meeting, parents should contact the teacher via email or Seesaw with an explanation of the absence. Unless communicated differently by the district, school, or your child's teacher, Morning Meetings begin for AM Kindergarten and all grade 1-5 students at 9:30 am. PM Kindergarten Morning Meeting begins at 9:50.
In the event of a FID, we will be sure to communicate these procedures and any pertinent information from the classroom teacher. Additionally, students should be taking their school issued i-pad or Chromebook home each day.
Our next big school event is on Friday, December 22. We will have our Portrait of an Eagle assembly where we will celebrate our latest award winners (see the below section with our latest award recipients), review the Portrait of an Eagle competencies, have a POE High Flyer Ticket Drawing, and sing a few holiday songs, led by our Music teacher, Mrs. Schade. Following the assembly, at around 2:20 PM, we will have our classroom holiday socials. Thank you to all of the classroom parents who are working on plans to make the winter socials a great experience for our students!
Lastly, our awesome Art Teacher, Mrs. Fox, will be leaving us at the Winter Break. Mrs. Fox is moving on to a new position which will allow her more flexibility and time with her family. She has made a great impact here at Shaull over the past seven years and will be greatly missed by staff, students, and families. We wish Mrs. Fox all the best as she begins a new journey in the field of education! Having said this, the school has been busy recruiting and interviewing Art teaching candidates. Please see the section below with an announcement regarding our finalist.
Due to the upcoming winter break, the next edition of Shark Bites will be Friday, January 5th.
Thank you for reading this edition of Shark Bites. Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy the upcoming Winter Break!
Respectfully,
Mr. T.

Pending School Board Approval on Monday, Ms. Phillips will become Shaull's new Art Teacher later this Winter:
Hello Shaull families,
My name is Ms. Sarah Phillips, and I am very excited to be your new art teacher! I come to you with seven years of elementary art experience, most recently at the fabulous Crestview and LeTort Elementaries in Carlisle.
My husband Sasan and I have two lovely kids- Roya, who started kindergarten at Shaull this year, and Kaaveh, who is four. We enjoy spending time in the great outdoors, playing board games, and (of course) making art together.
I look forward to meeting you soon and seeing what fantastic art the kids will create!
Eagle Spotlight!
Check out this amazing shout out!
Miss Wolf creates a positive, caring, and fun learning environment every day. Our son is always excited to go to school and she's had a tremendous impact on his new found love of reading. We are so thankful to have her as a teacher.
Cell Phones/Smart Devices Expectations for School
We have recently had several occurrences where students are texting their parents on smart watches to be picked up from school due to feeling ill or to be removed from other stressors of the school day. As a reminder, students are not permitted to have their cell phones on them during the instructional day or to be texting from other devices during the school day. Students may bring phones, but must have them secured in their backpacks/cubbies during the day. The school is not responsible for damaged, lost, or stolen cell phones.
More students are coming to school with smart watches. Students may wear their watches to school. However, students may not make/take calls and texts throughout the school day while in class. We have had several cases this year where students are texting their parent from their watch to come and pick them up from school. Any student who is not feeling well must follow school procedures, which includes going to see the school nurse if they are not feeling well. Only the school principal and school nurse may send students home. Please have a conversation with your child regarding the appropriate use of their smart watch if they wear one to school. We greatly appreciate your support with this as we wish to have students focused on their instruction during the school day.
Santa's Elf Calls from the CV Mini-THON
The Mini-THON team is extremely excited to announce that we are continuing our "Elf Call" Fundraiser through this holiday season. Families donate to CV Mini-THON and in exchange their child receives a call from one of Santa's elves! See the flyer and link below for details.
