MISSION
A Note from your Principal
Dear West Newton families,
As the 2017-2018 school year winds down I am filled with many happy memories of our students and staff. I will be sad to say goodbye for the summer break, but I know that we all need to reenergize for our next school year!
Please call the office staff at 317-856-5237 if your family is moving and will no longer be in the West Newton district next year. That will help us as we plan for next year’s class lists and will also ensure that we get your child’s records sent to their new school in a timely manner.
Many fun-filled and celebratory events are on the West Newton schedule for May:
- · May 11 & 15 = Visiting Artist
- · May 16 & 17 = BOGO Book Fair
- · May 16 = High Ability Showcase of Tiger Pride from 5:30-6:30pm
- · May 17 = Grades 1 & 2 Music Program at 7pm
- · May 25 = Last day of school
o 8:30am = Grades 3, 4, and 5 Honor Roll Ceremony
o 10:30am = Grade 6 Graduation
o 12-2pm = Grade 6 Celebration
o Report cards come home with the kids
Thank you for sharing your students with the West Newton staff. We will get to see students and parents at Registration (July 12 from 9am-12pm or 4-8pm; July 14 from 9am-12pm; or July 17 from 4-8pm) as well as our Back to School Night on Aug. 1 from 6-7pm.
With Tiger Pride,
Susan D. Strube, Principal
YEARBOOKS ARE HERE!!!
School Nurse Note:
All incoming 6th graders are required by Indiana state health department to have their meningococcal and hepatitis A immunization series complete upon entering the 6th grade. Most of you have already received these vaccines, in which case you may check with your school nurse to make sure a copy of updated vaccinations have been received.
If your child does not have the required immunizations, please make a doctor or Marion County Health Department appointment to get these completed before the new school year begins. It is important to have all required immunizations. An incomplete immunization record could lead to exclusion from school.
Immunization records may be brought into the school office during registration or faxed. Our fax number is 317-856-2148. To find a clinic that is administering immunizations, you may check with the school nurse for possible referrals. Walgreens pharmacy may also have vaccinations available. If you have any other questions please feel free to call our school nurse at 317-856-5237. Have a fantastic summer break and as always, be safe!!

HOMEWORK HIGHLIGHTS
Practice equals mastery ~ students will gain confidence and show success in the classroom. If you need help with ideas and/or strategies, contact your child's teacher.
SCHOOL-WIDE STRATEGIES
The West Newton staff utilizes school-wide strategies to support students in grades 1-6 with instruction aligned with the Indiana College and Career Ready Standards. The rigor increases as students progress through each grade level, but all staff use the same common strategies to support student learning.
Reading = Yes, Ma’am and marking & coding for text evidence
Math = CUBES problem solving steps and Math Fact Mastery
Writing = 6 Traits of Writing
Science = Indiana Science Initiative and cross-curricular embedding with reading of nonfiction
Social Studies = Cross-curricular embedding with reading of nonfiction
These strategies support our students with critical thinking skills and set high expectations for completion of work.
