LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Lions Park Families,
It is hard to believe that the 100th day of school was this past week, although I did have one parent tell me it feels like the thousandth day! Our second grade students and their teachers were able to mark the day by dressing like one hundred year olds. It was nice to see this normal tradition continue during this strange time.
Black History Month: This week also marked the start of Black History Month. Lions Park teachers are teaching students about the many contributions made by African Americans. Our second grade students are reading books about people like Rosa Parks and Ruby Bridges. Third graders will be watching videos and reading poems that share information about the role of African Americans in history and also hearing read alouds from the perspective of African Americans. Fourth graders will be exploring the topic by watching a video and reading text from sources such as Epic and Scholastic News. Fifth grade will be doing an interactive Pear Deck activity, watching videos and reading about Influential black women in guided reading. Some of our special education classrooms will be taking a virtual field trip to learn more about Martin Luther King Junior. While the contributions are black Americans are discussed throughout the year, we highlight these achievements during this month.
February Birthdays: We are also glad to celebrate our students with February birthdays. Please click this link to see which students are having a birthday this month.
Help Wanted in District 57: We are seeking an instructional assistant at Lions Park and multiple assistants at other school. The qualification for this role is to have a paraprofessional license. If you have an Associate’s Degree or higher or at least 60 semester hours of coursework from a regionally accredited college or university, you can apply for a Paraprofessional License. It is not a difficult process. If you are interested in learning more about this role, please feel free to reach out to me at kkelly@d57.org. We are also always in need of substitute teachers.
Live Stream for Hybrid Students: If your child is quarantined and is unable to come to school due to exposure to Covid, personal illness or family illness, please contact Ms. Kelly to arrange a live stream to their hybrid classroom. This will be different from the remote learning experience earlier this year because the teacher will have in person students and your child online, but it will provide access to core content when your child is unable to come to school. We are providing a live stream when students are out for illness or exposure to Covid. When we provide a live stream due to illness or exposure to Covid, our building technology assistant provides teachers with an additional laptop. Teachers also have to adapt some of their plans. We obviously will always provide education to students who have to be out for extended periods, but we can't promise we will always be able to accommodate last minute requests.
Bus for students starting in person February 22nd: As we look towards more students joining us in person on February 22nd, there is still time to sign up for the bus. The registration deadline is February 12th. While you can sign up on a rolling basis, there is no guarantee you will be routed by February 22nd if you sign up after February 12th.
Warmly,
Katie Kelly

Technology Issues
Although technology can work well, there are times when it just does not work correctly. Teachers will not be available to respond to emails during instructional times. Instead, please submit a Remote Learning Technology Support form by clicking here. Once submitted, someone from our District Technology Team will contact you to provide assistance.
If you experience a technical issue, please follow these steps to troubleshoot the problem:
Restart the Chromebook (make sure it turns all the way off before turning back on).
Quit any unused applications.
Sign out of an application if it's not working, and sign back in.
Move closer to your internet router if you are experiencing connectivity issues.
Turn off any accessibility features i.e., contrast mode, special cursor that may be set on the Chromebook. These can cause applications to run slow.
