Face Masks Required at Indoor School Events
For purposes of this protocol, approved face masks include homemade or store-bought cloth face masks, surgical masks, or transparent/clear face masks that cover the individual’s face from the bridge of the nose to snugly under the chin and fit snugly against the sides of the face with no gaps for air to enter or exit. Face masks must comply with all applicable CCSD policies, regulations, and dress codes pertaining to student and staff attire.
Types of Face Masks
Face masks with one-way valves or vents are not allowed unless covered with a cloth face mask (one-way valves allow air to be exhaled through the valve).
Face masks are recommended to be made with multiple layers (current recommendations are two layers of tightly woven cloth (cotton preferred) and one layer of synthetic material that can be repeatedly washed.
Standard face/neck gaiters (minimal filtration) and bandanas, which do not correctly cover the nose and mouth, may only be worn if layered.
Face shields are not a replacement for face masks, given concerns over their inability to minimize droplets spread to others. A surgical or cloth mask must be worn under a shield unless an accommodation has been granted.

Chromebook Care
As we are coming close to the end of the Semester, we would like to send out a few reminders to students regarding the care of their chromebook. Students are responsible for the general care of their school issued Chromebook. Students with Chromebooks that are broken or fail to work properly must take the device to the Burkholder Innovation Center (Library) as soon as possible so that the Chromebook can be repaired and to potentially avoid a fine. District-owned Chromebooks should never be taken to an outside computer service for any type of repairs or maintenance.
Below are a few important reminders in caring for your chromebook….
Carry your chromebook by its base, not the screen. Close it before moving or carrying. Grabbing the screen can cause damage to the LCD.
Do not put excessive pressure on the screen and NEVER close anything inside your chromebook.
Avoid eating or drinking near your Chromebook. Do not place your chromebook in your backpack with any liquids.
Only clean the screen with a soft dry anti-static cloth or microfiber cloth.
Do not leave the Chromebook in extreme hot or cold temperatures.
Do not place stickers on the Chromebook.
Do not tamper with, alter, or remove the identification labels currently on the Chromebook.
Avoid pulling keys off of the keyboard.
Report any chromebook damages or issues to the Innovation Center.
Wreaths Across America
Burkholder Middle School’s National Junior Honor Society is working with Wreaths Across America to raise funds to place wreaths on veterans’ graves at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City.
The National Junior Honor Society is asking for permission to place a decorated bin/canister at your business so that we can collect money to purchase $15 wreaths made of live greenery. With all the money collected, the wreaths will be placed on veterans’ graves during a special ceremony on December 18, 2021, starting at 9:00 AM, at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City.
There are more than 30,000 veterans buried at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Last year, nearly 10,000 wreaths were donated. Our goal at Burkholder Middle School is to place a wreath on 150 graves. Join us in our mission to Remember, Honor, Teach. Wreaths Across America bins/canisters will be placed at businesses around our school to collect customer’s loose change.
For information on sponsoring a wreath, visit Burkholder Middle School’s donation page from Wreaths Across America at this link.
Help us honor our lost veterans! If you have any questions, please contact me Ms. Cazett at cazetel@nv.ccsd.net or Ms. Pande and pandea1@nv.ccsd.net or call us at 702- 799-8080.

What is a BioBlitz?
A BioBlitz is a chunk of time where participants observe as much wildlife as possible – wildlife sightings, insects, plants, tracks… all of the above! This year, the BioBlitz includes the entire month of December and if you join the Project online – anything you observe in Nevada will count! Join the Project here: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/ndow-winter-bioblitz-2021. (If you are new to iNaturalist, you will need to create an account before you join the BioBlitz project.) This is free to anyone and starts today - on December 1 and lasts until midnight on December 31!
How do I make an Observation?
- It’s easiest to make an observation through the iNaturalist app (Apple App store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/inaturalist/id421397028; Google Play store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.inaturalist.android&hl=en_US&gl=US). But, you can also upload your observations through the website: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/ndow-winter-bioblitz-2021.
- Once you’ve created an account and joined the Project for this year’s Winter BioBlitz (https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/ndow-winter-bioblitz-2021), on your smart phone with the app open, hit “Observe” at the bottom of your screen. You will be prompted to take a picture with your smart phone or upload a picture. Afterward, you can hit “What did you see?” to check out what the app and the iNaturalist community thinks you saw. Select your best guess and hit “SHARE” at the bottom of your screen. As long as you have location sharing toggled on your app pr your phone, everything will be added to the Winter BioBlitz Project automatically. This data is useful to citizen scientists all over the globe and is corroborated and viewed by anyone who might be studying biodiversity or wildlife populations.
