The J-Hawk Experience!
Info you need to know for week of May 7-11!
Message from the principal
At UHS, we are blessed to have so many wonderful teachers and staff to care for students and develop their learning. As we enter Teacher Appreciation Week, May 7th-11th, I wanted to share a special note of appreciation for the teachers at UHS for all they do for our students. Besides leading learning and promoting academic development in students, our teachers do so much more in terms for inspiring passion in students and being there to support them when life's challenges arise. Our vision is to change the world, and I believe our teachers work each day to help that happen through their work with students, including the hours and work they invest in our students beyond the school day through coaching, advising clubs, directing, meeting, and working, in general, to help students have success.
I am truly grateful for their service to our students and community as a whole.

Sincerely,
Tim Carver

Student Announcements and Day 1/ Day 2 for the week
This week Monday, May 7th is a Day 2. Tuesday, May 8th, is a Day 1. Block days are a Day 2. Friday is a Day 1.
Exciting changes to UHS for fall 2018!
As we continue to expand and enhance opportunities for access to teachers to support learning, UHS will be rolling out some exciting changes to support students learning. School will still start and end at times is does this year along. We will continue to have a modified-block schedule (8 classes on Monday, Tuesday, Friday, and 4 block periods on Wednesday and Thursday along with Connections).
However, we are creating time in school day on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays, to have guaranteed access for teachers to have with students. We are reallocating time from 5th period (currently 11 minutes longer that all other periods in the day) along with using Connections time on those days to create additional time on those days.
Students will largely have choice of where they go during this time, including having intervention for additional learning, extensions of learning, and study table to further learning. There will be no additional homework tied to this time.
Look for additional information in coming weeks. Mrs. Wilson is pictured here with a cross section of students from UHS who came together on April 26th to provide some initial feedback about different aspects of this new opportunity.
Information about ESSA Conditions of Learning Survey
We are writing to announce that the Iowa Department of Education has included Conditions for Learning as part of the plan under the new federal education law, Every Student Succeeds Act. All Iowa public school districts will use the Conditions for Learning Survey (Survey) to improve safety, student engagement and the overall learning environment so that all Iowa students have optimum conditions for learning. Urbandale High School has joined the state in this important work.
Though we have surveyed students in the past, the Department of Education is providing us with an additional opportunity to provide feedback. Together we will seek creative solutions that will support a world-class education that provides students with 21st century skills to succeed in the world. Studies have shown this work matters. Improving skills such as solving problems, working out conflict, and working with other people in a group has led to double-digit increases on achievement test scores, improved classroom behavior and improved attitudes.
Our work to improve safety, student engagement and the overall learning environment will have a lasting impact on the future. All public schools in Iowa will use the statewide online Survey to assess Conditions for Learning with all 5th - 12th graders in the Spring of 2018. We will ask your child to simply fill out a confidential [private] survey. The survey will focus on issues ranging from student safety, to positive student relationships, to school rules and how they are enforced. Urbandale High School will receive timely data annually at the building level in the fall to support alignment of professional development with identified needs of students.
A high rate of participation by students in completing the Conditions for Learning Survey is important for obtaining the most complete school climate data for our school. Support from you in communicating to your students that this is their chance to be heard and to be part of the effort to improve conditions for learning at their school is critical.
Thank you for partnering with UHS to improve conditions for learning throughout the state. Please clink on this link with additional overview of about this opportunity. A written refusal form if you do not want your child/children to participate in completing the survey can be found at this link. Please print it and return it to Mr. Sackett at sackette@urbandaleschools.com or drop it by the UHS Counseling office. Students can also choose to not participate. We will be administering the surveys this week in students' 5th period class.
Please let us know if you have any questions and thank you again!
