Orlando Science High School Campus
Issue 2
August 24, 2018 Weekly Newsletter
Principal's Message
Dear Families and Students,
I hope your second week at Orlando Science High School was a success! Students are getting used to the school procedures and classroom routines.
As we conclude our second week, I like to thank all parents and students for following instructions during our dismissal and pick up procedures. This helps to maintain smooth traffic lanes. As we continue to assess and implement procedures on our Technology Drive campus, we appreciate your continued participation and patience.
For those of you who missed the first newsletter, please be advised that each week the Orlando Science High School "Weekly Newsletter" will be sent home via email and may also be found on our Facebook and Twitter pages. Our weekly newsletters are great resources to stay informed about school activities, reminders and important information. If you have students at the Lynx Lane campus, there is a link to their weekly newsletter at the bottom of this page for your convenience.
This week, I would like to introduce you our media center specialist, Meghan Singleton. We are excited to design our media center a place where our students read, research, enjoy and study. We are looking to increase our books in our library - we would ask our parents to donate some books for our students. You may see our amazon wish list for our new media center in this weeks newsletter.
Our parent volunteer organization is holding their first meeting on Wednesday, August 29th at High School Tech campus cafeteria. I appreciate all that our parents do to help our school, teachers, and students. We cannot be successful without your support. If you have not signed up our PVO, we encourage you to do so. Please find the details below.
Seniors, This is your year, 2019! I encourage you to be on top of your courses as well as your college applications. Please meet with Mr. I and check your progress and get the most up to date information and upcoming important deadlines. We will be hosting our senior dinners and breakfasts this year. Please stay tuned to our College Center corner.
Our curriculum night is set on Thursday, September 6th from 5:30-8:00p.m. Please be sure to mark your calendars. This is the best time to learn about your student's grade, specific curriculum, online resources, student progress monitoring system and about many learning resources we offer. I hope to see all of you there!
Respectfully,

Attendance Matters!
Attendance is a key to the success of your student's learning. If you have any attendance concerns such as upcoming absences, extended absences or questions please contact Mrs. Foley.
What is 30/30 Rule?
The “30/30 Rule is a Delayed Dismissal Weather procedure that the nationally recognized. It is required that the “30/30 Rule” be enacted by the school if thunder is heard within 30 seconds of a lightning strike. Orlando Science Middle/High follows this rule.
When 30/30 Rule is implemented, Students will not be dismissed until 30 minutes has passed from the last sound of thunder. However, parents/guardians who wish to pick up their child/children during delayed dismissal, will be allowed to sign out their child/children at the front office.
In order to pick up your student(s) from the front office during this procedure parents/guardians must bring their dismissal sign to the front door of the school to sign their child/children out. If you do not have a dismissal sign, you will need to provide a picture ID and be on the school pick-up list to pick-up the child/children. Bus riders will be delivered home when conditions are all safe for dismissal.
An automated telephone and/or email message will be used to notify parents/guardians about delayed dismissals. Always be sure to update the school when your phone or email information changes. Thank you for your cooperation on our students’ safety.
Join the OSS Parent Volunteer Organization!
Dear Orlando Science Lynx Lane and Technology High School Families,
It is time, once again, to join the Parent Volunteer Organization (PVO). Membership is $25 per family for returning families and $30 for new families, your membership dues go directly back into the school to provide items and supplies for our teachers. We are also asking that PVO members work with specific committees (School Improvement, Fundraising, Volunteer Work, Teacher Appreciation, Events, Etc.) Please utilize the SCHOOL PAY link below to pay your dues.
If you have questions, comments, or requests, you may email OSS.PVO@orlandoscience.org . A formal PVO committee, including president and vice-president, will be announced at the end of the first quarter of the 2018-2019 School Year. PVO will hold bi-monthly meetings that will inform parents of progress, agendas, and upcoming events.
Thank you for all of your help and support as we look forward to a great year.
Meet the Media Specialist
Hello OSHS families, I am Mrs. Singleton, the new Media Specialist on campus. One of the exciting benefits of having a new school building is the potential to create a respectable library from scratch! The new Media Center in room 324 is a beautiful, welcoming space and we want our students to be using it as soon as possible.
The first step in preparing the space for our students is to stock the shelves. Our students love to read and, creating a Media Center which relects their age, interests, and diversity, is a priority. Your donations of new or gently used items from our Amazon Wishlist are most appreciated. Items do not need to be purchased from Amazon.com but they should be new or gently used.
Take note that the OSHS Media Center Amazon Wishlist is meticulously maintained by myself and our teachers. We take the time to specifically choose items which benefit the minds and skills of our students.
If you would like to donate books from this list, you may bring them to the Media Center during Curriculum Night. If you do so, I will enter your name into a Barnes and Noble gift card raffle prize (one raffle ticket per item).
If you would like to donate items and prefer to have them shipped, please deliver to:
Orlando Science High School
Attn: Media Center
2600 Technology Drive Suite 300
Orlando, FL 32804
Be sure to message me if you choose to have items shipped so I may acknowledge your contribution.
I look forward to making this Media Center a place where your student will want to come and learn.
Orca Pride!
