Accessible Math
January 2019
Language and Mathematics
For so many of our students, the struggle to solve a word problem begins with expressive and receptive communication challenges. While students with disabilities may learn differently than a typical student who speaks a language other than English, many of the same supports and differentiation strategies can be used to increase access and comprehension for ALL students.
If you've tried to create visual mathematics vocabulary supports and problem solving scaffolded supports, come to OS this summer for fantastic, teacher ready materials and lots of ideas to make secondary mathematics more accessible.
The Supporting Diverse Learners in Math Project has developed strands of differentiation and language supports for sixth through eighth grades, Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II. These tools can be used in conjunction with any mathematics program meeting the Michigan Mathematics Standards. This workshop will provide professional learning for educators on using the strands and supports as part of daily instruction. All resources and materials are provided free of charge. A two day professional learning opportunity will take place on June 26 and 27. Click here for more information. Link for registration
