The Principal Pack
Greetings Washington families,
This month marks the first time we have ever rung in a new year as the Washington Middle School learning community. On behalf of the office staff, teaching staff, support staff and everyone in our learning community, I would like to extend to you the warmest wishes for a happy new year.
We have many new developments to celebrate as we look back on 2019 and at least as many exciting new opportunities awaiting us in 2020. The best of these opportunities is our privilege to work with your children - the students of Washington Middle School. We have seen so much of their learning and growth already in the last months of 2019, that we can’t help but be optimistic about 2020.
It was just 6 months ago that a group of our staff gathered to develop an action plan for our school. The action plan we created was built around the goal of making Washington Middle School a place where we make connections - with each other, with our learning and with our future. This new year is a great opportunity for us to reflect on the goal and assess our progress. To that end we are thinking about a number of ways to reflect and look forward.
Under the guidance of the Board of Education and the curriculum committee, we have assessed the new middle school model and identified some ways that we may enhance and improve student learning in the model. In the coming weeks we will invite our learning community families to share feedback on some specific proposals.
Next month will be an opportunity for our teacher teams to showcase Washington and our progress at a public school board meeting. Work is already underway to highlight our students, their learning growth and the connections they are making.
Our professional staff have each committed to create new and innovative ways to promote student learning as we focus on our goal of creating connections. Please check out these wonderful people and your children on our Facebook page - linked here for convenience.
We would like to invite each of you to consider participating in our Parent Teacher Organization. One of the highlights of each month is for us to meet with a group of teachers and hear the update from an assortment of teams reporting on the exciting student learning that happens every day. Our PTO has a vision to expand the learning community beyond the walls of the school to engage parents and families in supporting learning of all students. It has been a rewarding experience to see this vision in action.
Thank you all for the opportunity to serve our learning community at Washington. It is an honor to help every student learn, grow and fulfill the potential each one has in his or her heart and mind.
Mr. Masters and the Washington Staff

Counseling Center
With the new semester approaching, Mrs. Johannes and Ms. Gleason have a focus on helping new and transferring students make a smooth transition to Washington.
The Individual Planning Conferences with every 8th grade student will start on January 6th and will continue into mid-February. Salmon-colored registration sheets for 9th grade courses were due Friday, December 20th, but counselors will still accept them in January. So if you see this sheet in your child's backpack, please remind him or her to turn it in the office.
We are excited to be connecting with students, learning goals, and future plans. Please feel free to reach out to our counselors if you have any questions.
