Volunteers must achieve Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) standards for the 17-21 year age category and successfully execute the flexed arm hang (FAH) for twenty seconds as an assessment for Airborne training. This is a safety mitigation measure to ensure students can pull and hold a slip to safely avoid fellow jumpers in the air, obstacles on the ground, and assume a proper prepare to land attitude. The APFT and flexed arm hang are two SEPARATE events. Both events will be conducted on the first day of Airborne School. The APFT will be conducted first until completion. The Flex Arm Hang will be conducted immediately after completion of the APFT. All students who do not meet the standards of the APFT will be offered a onetime retest 24 hours later. Failure to successfully meet the standard of the APFT on the initial test and the retest will result in a drop from the Basic Airborne Course. Students who fail to meet the initial FAH assessment will be re-evaluated throughout the course. A final assessment for these personnel will be conducted on the last day of Tower Week Training, prior to Jump Week. For those students who fail the initial FAH assessment and are required to retest, a recommendation will be made to the chain-of-command. Those recommendations include: drop from the course, recycle back through Tower Week for an additional week of training, or allow the Soldier to proceed to jump week with a waiver. Each recommendation will be made on a case-by-case basis and will be based on a holistic assessment of the student's performance throughout Ground and Tower weeks. Pay is usually begins at $18,378, however, bonuses are prevalent. This is true for all positions in the army.
