Tech Tidbit: Get Students Reading!
Technology provides so much access to information today! Students truly do have access to news and current events in just about evey subject area available at their fingertips. One of the strategies that Jensen discusses in Engaging Students with Poverty in Mind is to let students teach each one another (see Ch. 6, p. 100). One idea that I came across recently was to start class by having students find and read a content-area appropriate article and share what they learned briefly with the class. I used to do this in a government class I taught where we followed current events. Four days a week we watched CNN Student News and the fifth day a student was responsible for sharing 3 news stories with us instead. It was great to see what information they pulled and what events/stories they deemed imporant. Sometimes it can be intimidating to send students straight to the internet (GOOGLE) to find this kind of information. Thankfully there are a variety of technology tools (Apps) that you can use to guide students in this endeavor. Here are just a few examples:
- Science News and Discoveries: app-based magazine that highlights topics in a variety of science-related fields. The specific topics include the environment, space, NASA, earth, the living world, health, biology, physics, and living green.
- Newsy: Promising to make you smarter, faster, Newsy delivers context with convenience to keep you informed on the world’s news stories. Through short videos on your iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, Newsy accelerates your understanding of a news story by analyzing perspectives from multiple sources. A news analyzer, not an aggregator, Newsy is the only video news app producing daily videos that highlight the nuances in reporting.
- A.P. Mobile: The Associated Press claims to be "where the News gets its news," and there's no better place to stay up to date on the latest breaking local and national news. You can customize what kind of stories are in your feed, and the app constantly refreshes so you don't miss any new developments.
